Imo they should allow say 2 extra youth players to be sub ( so 7 normal + 2 youths ) that way they’ll get a chance not only to be around the matchday squad but able to call on them too more
I like this idea but there would probably end up being a lot of tomfoolery with what classifies as a youth in matchday squads by lots of teams. So much so as to make it basically useless.

weren't Spurs one of the clubs leading the increase of subs from 5 to 7 based on the fact they could give youth a chance on the bench?

I was thinking about that also, but it would be a tricky situation. What would be the age restrictions for those bench spots, because I wouldnt want it just available to u-18's, I'd like to see that spot mostly given to 19 and 20 year olds from the u23 squad get those spots. But then that open the door for teams to use those slots for the uber talented youngsters that are already apart of the squad. It's a good idea you just know teams are going to abuse the system.

Yes. And it should have been mandatory that two of those spots be given to club trained or U23s players.

Levy campaigned for this, at the time saying:

'Additionally, it should also mean that younger players from the academy can be given an opportunity to break into the first team.'

Yes clubs will try and use and abuse it.

am i the only one who sees little to no merit in this idea?

so we get to stick a couple of youth players on the bench each week, realistically though when are they ever going to be used? it just seems like a superficial attempt at youth integration to me.

Nabil Bentaleb - Huge fan of him, and feel the emergence of Winks was why he was eventually let go. Is he/will he be of the level that we'd need now?
Not really sure what has happened to Bentaleb. Not playing at Schalke with them mainly starting Meyer and McKennie in a 2 man central midfield who are both younger. He may be hurt, but I haven't seen anything about that.

ATM it has no merit because there’s no stipulation it has to be youth academy players but if it did then there’d be a lot of merit as most teams would likely to call upon there own instead of buying in

i still don't see any merit to it. poch and the vast majority of managers aren't going to bring on a youth player over an established first teamer.

our bench this weekend - vorm, aurier, foyth, rose, sissoko, lamela, llorente

now let's just say we can have kwp and sterling there as well, in what circumstances is poch ever going to bring either of those on ahead of the seven above?

Yeah that wouldn't work, the original suggestion when moving from 5 to 7, was that the extra two would be youth.

Your original quote of windy was going from 5 subs to 7.

Although I’d definitely bring on sterling over Llorente

Like any youth integration it ultimately comes down to how willing is the manager to do so. With the idea making two extra bench spots available solely for youth would at least get kids into the matchday squad and in certain circumstances given the managers preference give some lads an opportunity they wouldnt of had otherwise.

As a youth integration policy, increasing the amount of subs probably isn't really worth much, but I still don't understand any opposition to increasing the amount of subs that clubs can have at their disposal.

Presumably after Brexit the premier league could change the rules re home grown players in a squad. I doubt they would want t o as they seem to encourage a league full of foreign players to keep overseas interest in the games .

Anybody know the rules for bundesliga squads

The PL homegrown rules are independent of UEFA, they differ from league to league but brexit wont make no difference to our UEFA membership
