just count the goals - he is still scoring goal now. Always a threat and was great for us for the main art of his career, you may talk about pressing but there are plenty of players who can do that the hardest thing in football is scoring goals and he is done that wherever he has played.

Nothing else but scoing goals thats an acknoledgement of the man not a criticsm, a forward who can defend or one that can score goals? Make your own mind up

But he doesn't do it enough to justify the fact that he does nothing else for the team. That's the ultimate point. Which is probably why he's been part of two or three teams that have been relegated.

You can't score goals if you're too easy to play against. Defoe makes his sides too easy to play against. Its okay if you're a struggling side, to an extent, because you probably only have one strategy anyway, which is to sit deep, soak up pressure and hit teams on the break. Defoe's all round play was nowhere near good enough to play another way and he certainly couldn't be relied upon to create his own goals. The odd example of him scoring a wonder goal does not negate the point that in general his ability to create chances for himself was very poor. He wasn't routinely dropped after November for no reason. Even one of his biggest fans, in Redknapp, lost patience with him don't forget. Defoe was a flat track bully, one dimensional, overrated in front of goal and as poor positionally at 36 as he was at 16. His inability to time a run and remain onside was a constant gripe of many fans, myself included.

just have to disagree on this one a great Spurs player for me a constant goal than threat - of course of centre forward who plays on the last man will get caught off side - I wonder what you would have made of Lineker Greaves or even Chivers none of which contibuted much defensively but like Defoe they all scored goals

the ultimate aim is to score goals and his bloody good at that - thats what he does for the team !!! Its still the hardest thing to do in football I could give you loads of forwards ala Jensen who work their nuts of for the team but can they score goals?

But it's about the team scoring, not an individual. I'm not saying Janssen is wonder bread either, but Defoe does not score enough himself and creates absolutely nothing for anyone else. Why do you think we were the best team he ever got a game with - and that was before we were really good.

You could never have a defoe type as a part of the first xi, but I'd take him as a super sub member of the squad everyday.

I do remember Lineker and I loved him to bits. Chivers and Greaves were before my time but can say catogorically that Chivers is done a massive disservice being put in with that company. Chivs worked his arse off for the team, he didn't always get to play through the middle, and there was tons more to his game than goals - although he bagged plenty of those as well. Greaves & Lineker played in a time where teams played very structured 4-4-2s. Centre backs booted it out. Fullbacks passed it on. One midfielder chaced and harried, the other got forward, the wide players got in crosses, one striker dropped off, one striker played on the shoulder. That was the predominant style everyone played with, with minor stylistic variations. During such an era poachers like Greaves and Lineker were worth their weight in gold.

As all things do eras come and go, just as the old Bobby Smith style no.9 or the Danny Blanchflower style Half-Back went the way of the dinosaur. With the influx of foreign players, foreign coaches and foreign tactical styles the old stratified 4-4-2 was hideously exposed. Where as once upon a time Defoe might have been a goal scoring collusus (although I still have my doubts) in the modern game he is a passenger. Other teams will defend with 11 and create with 11. A team with Defoe in defends with 10 (or less) and creates with 10 (or less).

Lineket was a goal machine, a world class version of someone like Michael Owen. Greaves even more so, and with fantastic skill to boot. Chivers was basically the Berbatov of his time, not quite as hard working as Kane but a Rolls Royce of a player. Defoe can’t be compared to any of these.

That said, Defoe being unable to create his own goals is an absolute myth too...

He isn’t one of the greats, but he was a very good player for us and more than just a tap in merchant

Defoe is a Spurs man, scored a lot of goals for us and loved doing it...he gets such a disservice from some Spurs fans, we all knew his limitations but he was a good goalscorer for us and a good goalscorer in general 7th in the all time Pl scorers says as much.

People already turning on Winks, suggesting that he should sit out upcoming games  I could've sworn some of the same people were lauding him as the next coming of Modric/Carrick and now after two indifferent showings he's :poop::poop:

Its always best to ignore post match reactions as they're all emotion and no thought. As far as I'm concerned Winks didn't stand out as uniquely awful.

Feels like Winks is about to receive the Bentaleb treatment. Sherwood brought him through he did really well, all our other players were poor, so kept playing. Inevitably in his first season he hit a bad patch and got tired. Fans turned on him and called him teacher's pet.

We never change. Winks struggled yesterday like most combined with his 'poor' game against stoke when he didn't pass forward that time fans ate now onto him.

Looks like there were 2 games yesterday. Not sure but looks like one was an u18s match against Ipswich.

We won 4-2. Oluwayemi plated in that game. Assume DeBie has gone home for Xmas. Don't know what Freeman does. Clarke got an assist and goal, hopefully starting to find his feet. Like the previous she group and with the addition of Bennett. These guys really gave depth. When you consider Thorpe and TOB haven't features either. It's a good sign

I assume our u16s had another match. Not sure who against but likely Ipswich too. We won 5-2, though Asante claims it was 6-2. Assume it must have been sane game. If so.

Bennett 3 assists Madueke 2 assists.
Goals: Asante x 4, Bennett x 1 and Madeuke x 1

Not sure if winks is running on empty and poor patch or if he has limitations. I’m starting to wonder if he can only shine when the game is infront of him when he has time to slot a pass. But in a high pressure game he can look weak and flustered. Yes people will point to the Madrid games, but I don’t think he was under intense pressing, he had time to play his game. Hopefully it’s just a dip in form and not fundamentals in his game that are flawed. For me as a team we need a dominant ball playing CM like a Pogba who winks could play alongside in a carrick type role. I’m not sure I see winks with wanyama/Dier working, I think it lacks attacking drive.

We must really be putting our money where our mouth is with these Chefs in Training. Plating their dishes like executive chefs.

Apologies, my poor attempt at humor.
