Spain don't have a reserve league/teams, they use B teams and youth sides - and yes it works for them.
The issue is England has more league teams than most other countries and introducing B teams (which I'm in favour of) would sound the death knell for many lower league teams.

I believe the way Spain and Germany alleviate the affect on lower league teams is by strictly allowing for the maximum 25 players per squad. If you're not registered in the league you don't play. For U21 players they also havr to be registered and can play no more than 5 games in either an A or B team and still be allowed to move up/down between teams.

It means the clubs can't really horde players but can still get them in competitive football.

If it was Spurs, you'd effectively have 2 squads of players (50 in total) regardless of age - all registered. All other players would be part of the academy league or not play.

There is more chance of Basildon Town winning the Champions League than that sort of restructuring happening in this country. There's over a hundred years of culture and tradition standing in the way. In the long run it could perhaps, maybe, possibly improve some aspects of the game but it would also kill something important stone dead. I also don't see it ending rich clubs gaming the system. The rules would have to be very clear and strict which just isn't going to happen with the powerful Premier League round the table. They'll always find a way to tighten the screw just that bit tighter.

Yup I’m sure it will really bring his game on as opposed to working with Poch and being around Harry Kane ?
Not sure why you’re so sceptical. Youth development in the French league is something we could learn a lot from. Think it’s a sensible move for him.

Totally agree with you although some would argue allowing B teams into Checkatrade Trophy is the start of things to come.

My interest is in seeing a club able to train and educate a player in the club philosophy without having to let them go out to another club on a useless loan at the same time get them into competitive football.

The interesting thing is in this system youth players don't usually make the breakthrough until 22 or 23 years old.

Was having a look at Lyon squad in transfermarkt. Looks as if they have one main striker and x2 kids 18+19 who griffiths will be competing with. Both have many France age group caps so must be pretty decent and both had about 10 appearances for for senior team. No idea if any players listed as winger can also play striker and possibly they may still buy another striker. So Griffiths is likely to be 4th or 5th in line at best no better than his situation with us. Also noticed their two 18/19 strikers don’t have any youth appearances listed like U23 just CL youth games. Does France have an equivalent U23 league otherwise he will sitting on his arse a lot .
I think the point is if he performs well there or scores goals he will.likely be given a chance.

If he performs well here and scores goals he still may never get a chance. You only have to look at how many players get brought through in Ligue 1 compared to PL to realise its a good decision. He may not come through there but his chances are a damn sight better than coming through here

Yup I’m sure it will really bring his game on as opposed to working with Poch and being around Harry Kane ?

What benefit is training under Poch for 3 years if you don't play PL football. Do you think Alli would have been better off training under Poch when he was 16 or playing first team football for lesser coaches in League 1. You can have all the training in the world means nothing without opportunity

Are other teams players also leaving to go abroad?

I don't have a full list though I'm sure I could source one. But off by heart id say this season we have lost the most abroad on a permanent basis.

Over the last couple of seasons not sure.

We've lost, if we include Maghoma and Goddard, 5 and potentially another I'm Edwards and maybe even Brown.

Arsenal have a couple in Hinds, Crowley and Willovk abroad that I can remember.
City have Boadu and Sancho.

Chelsea have only lost Panzo. Then other clubs have lost one here and there so by my reckoning we have lost the most abroad out of the comparable clubs, while simultaneously having the best reputation for bringing players through. Work that one out.

List obviously excludes players we've lost to English clubs too.

I guess fans now have to work out why more players want to leave us compares to other top 6 clubs which is baffling considering they have the best chance of coming through here. Maybe they all have attitude problems, something our academy players must just pick up after spending a few years here.

Serious question what do French clubs do better than us ? I might be chatting shit but isn’t it through their national set up that they excel as opposed to individual clubs ? As in there’s not gonna be so much benefit for an English kid in their club set up ?

They give them opportunities. It is well known the English academies are producing the best players.in the world up.until the age of 18/19. Then there comes the glass ceiling where they go.on endless loads or get stuck in u23 football whereas the lesser players from other countries like France are playing Ligue 1 football and developing.

We waste loads of talent claiming they aren't good enough whereas that doesn't happen I'm France. Look at Ndombele the guy had one season in Ligue 2 CM. Went straight into his parents clubs CM one of the top 3 clubs in their league.

I genuinely can't remember the last time an academy player had one loan in a club league below and went straight into.the first team.of a top 6 club. It just doesn't happen.

And that's what these players are finally starting to understand watching academy players they know are top quality rotting on benches

That's a relatively easy one to answer. Chelsea & City pay kids life changing money. You've got to be really damn sure that you're moving on to something concrete before you walk away from that. Its easier for a Griffiths or a Forson to move on because its not like they're set for life. In general Griffiths is a relatively affluent young fella but not by footballing standards. He can take his chances. I imagine that the equivalent kid at Chelsea or City has a whole lot more riding on the decision. Some of their kids are on simply eye watering money, with perks on top.

Ye but it's also the reason I included Boadu. In case the question was generally what clubs players have ended up.movimg abroad. Or what clubs players have actively chosen to go abroad. We stand at 3 for those choosing to go abroad than stay here. I same as Arsenal but I don't know if all of Arsenal's were their choice or released. I can't be bothered to check but wouldn't surprise me if Crowley was released having not met his hype for one reason or another

Definitely agree Chelsea and City pay massive wages, offer better development opportunities, and have better academies I wouldn't leave there either.

But Im pretty sure we've also lost more than Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, United and probably most other PL clubs e.g Southampton, Fulham

Wasn't it only a couple of years ago that Solanke and RLC were on the same money - or close to it - as Eriksen?!

There are lots of reasons why both us and English clubs struggle to get young talent ‘over the line’. Main thing is the money clubs have at their disposal here, and how important it is to be in the Premier League. Means club want tried and tested first, and have the money to do so.

There is space for a team, like Palace, to bring through young talent, and this is where they could be similar to French teams - will struggle to hold onto top players long term, so you get players moving on allowing space for others to move up, but should also have the resources to buy good quality youngsters and invest in youth facilities.

For us, we have now reached the point where we need top quality players to get us where we want to be/stay, which means less opportunity for risk (of playing young, unproven players). It’s the two quality players for every position thing.

What does wind me up is spending decent to big money on squad fillers who won’t get any better, and/or take a place that a youth player could have taken.

I don’t understand the need to have three experienced goalkeepers
I would have played KWP rather than sign Aurier, (but there were still question marks over Trippier)
Did we need Foyth, as good as he has shown?
Sissoko or Onomah?
GKN - has looked better this pre-season, but we didn’t need him nor N’Jie before him

A signing like Lucas Moura, or a new CM I can understand because they go into the core 20 first team players, but beyond that why spend decent money on someone who isn’t top class, won’t be used that much, and stops a young player coming through?

(Then we won’t sign anyone and Skipp, TOB, CCV, heck even Edwards might get a game!)

Take one look over in the transfer thread and you'll see why.

We're linked with Grealish, Martial and Zaha. Players not guaranteed to be first choice but could improve us. We could use anyone of Skipp, Amos, Onomah instead of Grealish (despite being slightly different style of play) and yet people wouldn't be happy.

There needs to be clear instructions to get these players adequate loan deals at the start of the window so they can mentally prepare and come back next season stronger
