It will be much better when the whole of europe closes their windows on the same date (before the first games) as us next year. Its onlt this one season its been different. Ive much preferred it closing before our games. Leaves us to just focus on the football.

has that been confirmed as happening?

Doesn't look unusual in any way. For quite a few years the routine has been to throw some names out to the press at the beginning of the window and get fans excited. Then NONE of them get signed despite being really really close. Sometimes he even puts in a really insulting low bid on deadline day which he knows will not get accepted so he can pretend he really tried. Only difference this time is Levy didn't bother digging in the clearance bin for any cheap player to throw at fans. For some reason we can never buy players early but instead wait till the last minute.
Oh yes, Levy thinks that he will get a better deal and that a club that didn't want to sell the player will suddenly be so desperate to offload him, despite the player being a key part of their first team, and off him to us for way under market value.

Never buy players early? Maybe the last two seasons, but trippier, toby and wanyama were all signed in the first week of july.

I think our target market has gone up since we signed those players. None of them had any interest from the top clubs we rival now. Maybe our pool of quality is reduced compared to what it used to be because of the calibre we are looking at and how rivals may nudge themselves into the mix if they have the money to throw at deals prior to any other signings they have made.

Wait until your rivals spend & gives you a clearer path to any gems you may have unearthed, like Sanchez for example. I could be wrong but it wouldn't surprise me

If those players are fully fit they will get in our first team, so their calibre/quality is good enough. Their profile was not that high at the time we signed them. I'd prefer we continued to concentrate on calibre/quality over profile.

It seems to me our ITKs have in too many instances been used by the club. The ITKs have passed on the info they get in good faith but it has been what the club wants to 'get out there' and has not always been an accurate reflection of what is actually going on (or rather not going on). Perhaps I am completely wrong but the excitement created even before the window opened seems to have been totally unrealistic but deliberately created. No signings and despite more than one ITK saying Alli and Eriksen have signed new contracts no announcements have been made.

This past window has perfectly illustrated why ITK should always be taken with large doses of salt.

Conspiracies everywhere. Itks seem to just have friends/family that work for the club that sometime pass on information really doubt the club would leak misleading information, what purpose does it serve? Fans are even more pissed off than if no information had come through.

If you wanted to leak information before the window opened you'd say the club is under financial pressure with the new stadium but are optimistic we can bring in one or two. If we manage to sell a few fringe players we can bring in more. This would have managed expectations. There was never a question of not selling season tickets with it being our first year and qnyone who would buy a season ticket solely on the back of what an itk says deserves little sympathy.

I'm not sure if Levy is gambling on the transfer fees bubble bursting at some point. No sign of that happening so far but the plain fact is that 20m buys next to nothing in the transfer window but still buys more or less what it did a fair while back in stadium construction. With the stadium price spiralling I think this could be a factor in our lack of transfer activity.
That and the uk economy is about to tank majorly

Rumour on Goal website that we made a 25m deadline day bid for Tammy Abraham. Really rate that kid, hope we can make a move for him next summer. Likely to go on loan to Villa for the season now.

If only these Chelsea youngsters weren't signing 5 year deals left, right and centre it might be slightly easier to get a deal done.

Hoping that Sarri will consider him and Loftus-Cheek as surplus to requirements by next summer and we could try to sell Sissoko and Llorente and add the two of them. 2 foreign players for 2 talented, young englishman. Improves the squad, improves the HG situation. Absolute no brainer IMO.

Downside is getting a deal done with Chelsea will be like ice skating uphill.

You mean our team that is not good enough to actually win the league but falls just short each time for the last 3 seasons? How is the quality good enough when despite having them we win NOTHING?

Should we be looking at players that are good enough to make the team as it is or players that are the next level up and can actually improve it rather than keep things at the level they are at now? I

Janssen, Wimmer, Davies, Vorm and Alli were all signed fairly early too. (Alli signed on deadline day of winter window and loaned back, obviously).
That makes 8/21 signings (almost half!) done early, with a similar number left until late August and a few (e.g. Dier) done in early August.
It's only teams who really splash the cash and overspend that get most of their business done early.

Some of you owe yourselves an apology. You’ve embarrassed yourself saying how it’s always the same story and we’ll struggle early doors. Can you see now that having a settled, happy side is actually an advantage early on ?

We haven’t and we didn’t sign a single player.

Moura HAS been like a new signing with 3 in 3.

Completely agree. Almost all of our signings in the last 3 years or so have been mentioned first by the papers before any ITK. Yes I know we're linked to a lot of players by the press but you can tell when it's speculation or if negotiations have really started.

Some people said that the players would see the lack of signings as a lack of ambition.

Here’s Harry on that...

« The gaffer said he’s not just going to bring in players for the sake of it. What that does is it give the rest of the squad huge belief because it shows he has belief in us, so now we have to repay him for that and repay the club for that »

So those of you who were upset ... admit you were wrong ... admit everything’s cool.

Is this how it's going to be every game we win or lose? People wagging their smugness in this thread?

I don't think anybody anticipated the world cup boys coming in so fit and that turns the lack of signings into an advantage that we have the most fluidity in our squad as they know eachother the best but let's wait until later on in the season, when there's double game weeks and there's big big games in feb and march and if we are still in the mix then we can talk about whether we needed signings to put us over the edge or not.

This dickswinging depending on how results go on a weekly basis is pathetic.

Thank you.

That was exactly the line taken by the forums more measured posters. Wait and see. Stop freaking out. Hysteria and criticism is premature.

Im glad discourse has readjusted.

I mean what I felt was that, I was disappointed that Levy didnt get the players Poch wanted and whilst I agree with the notion of not signing a player for the sake of it, I'm amazed that Levy couldn't land a single target in the world of football that would help Poch. Also didn't help the feeling that Alder and Mousa were going to be gone and the fact they've be integrated changes things significantly.

My disappointment made me feel concerned that Poch wasn't getting backed and when you have one of the most incredible young managers in world football and with the likes of Madrid and United needing a long term manager to steer their ships that he would be open to going to one of them. I felt in terms of what we could achieve this season was that it's unlikely we can compete with City and Liverpool this season for the title where I feel maybe two signings would give us a great chance. Then people react as if those concerns are "hysteria" where as I see them as pragmatic.

I'd love for the manager and players to go beyond my expectations of them and feel it would be asking a lot but I want to take each game as it comes rather than be reactionary either positively or negatively especially with a new stadium to have to deal getting to grips with. I'm always waiting to see whether we get to the domestic semi finals or a champs league knockout tie to see whether we have taken the next step within the squad or needed some additional quality, not a game vs a united team who are falling apart.

So far so good. Let's enjoy the ride but the time to be smug is at the end of the season, not three games in.
