Really poor from Williams - no class or respect in defeat. She really can act like a petulant and spoiled brat towards officials. A shame that it takes the shine off what should be an amazing moment for Osaka.
Missed the final as don't have Amazon, what happened? (saw the score but not much else)

I only saw parts of the trophy presentation, but seemed like she handled that well - trying to keep the crowd from booing Osaka...

Poor from Williams and pathetic from the crowd. The next time Americans complain about the crowds at the French Open I hope the French bring this final up.

It was such a shame to see for Osaka. Here you had a 20 yr old winning her first slam and also becoming Japan’s first slam winner (I believe) which should have been the highest point of her career and instead she is there crying and getting booed by the crowd-absolutely horrible stuff.

Umpire makes three decisions clearly in line with the rules.

Yup looks like a clear example of sexism to me Serena!

She really needs to stop digging now, her coach has even admitted that he was coaching her during the game.

The whole American style production just seems so way off what tennis is supposed to be, it's absolutely awful. Then combine that with a disgustingly sore cheating loser humiliating a young girl in what should be the proudest moment of her life, and a truly vile crowd acting like total scumbags, and you've got the worst open on the tour by far.

But...but...she has a daughter! She is the victim! #justice4serena

Serena Williams is a fantastic tennis player and undoubtedly has had to overcome a greater number of obstacles to get to where she is than some other players from more privileged backgrounds. But my god she is an unbearable, self-righteous cow.

Maybe if she wants to be a role model for her daughter, she should stop throwing tennis rackets and throwing a hissy fit in front of millions of people the minute she starts losing.

Surprised more isn't being made of this. I haven't heard her apologise for her behaviour once. Also condoning it because "some male players do the same" is a ridiculous argument, the sort a child makes when in trouble.

I'd be more inclined for the WTA to issue further punishment for dragging the game through the dirt rather than seeing this as a clear example of oppression.

Instead the WTA have backed Serena. The mind boggles.

This is a quote I just seen on BBC

"We watch the guys do this all the time," she said on the ESPN set at Flushing Meadows.

"They are badgering the umpire on the changeovers, and nothing happens. There's no equality."

I don't watch tennis much, but if all they are doing is badgering the umpire and saying it was in/out then I can see why they do it. But to then say he has to say he is sorry and he is a liar and thief is just going to the next level and damaging the umpiers integrity and isn't acceptable.

I've only seen players shout at the umpire once or twice, never to the extent that she did and each time they received a warning for abusive language, same as she did. Her coach admitted coaxhing, the racket break is a standard penalty, she doesn't have a leg to stand on IMO. Can't believe she hasn't issued a formal apology to the umpire yet.

Getting a bit sick of hearing this sexism in tennis BS to be honest.

There definitely is sexism in tennis.

But that's what makes something like this even more frustrating because Serena undermines that by complaining about sexism in a situation where there isn't any. It makes any other claims of sexism, whether justified or not, look silly and that's a shame.

What's worse is that the various governing bodies involved are so mired in self-interest that they are crying 'sexism' without even considering the issues, because they need to support Serena who is their biggest money-spinner.

In what way do you believe there is sexism in top end tennis? Are you talking about the financial differences that keeps being brought up? If so I'd have to strongly disagree.

The prize money argument is a tricky one and I don't think there's a simple argument either way.

But I'm more thinking of things like the authorities getting much more involved in what women wear, the woman who was penalised for changing her top the other day, the women's double winners who were shunted off the court to get the men on the other day etc etc. I think it's fairly well accepted that a lot of female umpires get more stick than the men as well, and of course the men's final always goes on last in the grand slam tournaments.

So there definitely is sexism within the sport. It's fair enough to question whether that's more than other sports, or society in general, but either way it's definitely there. And I'd be more behind Serena if she pointed something like that out, rather than trying to cover her own childish outburst in a fake dialogue around sexism.

If they have a schedule and running behind they would be hurrying any players off the pitch, just happened to be the woman's doubles that were on before.

The men's final is the one that draws in more viwers as far as I can tell and crouds so it's not sexist to put that on last, they want people to stay and watch other games until that's on and finished instead of going home.

The men play 5 sets and draw in more sponsorship and revenue IMO so the pay difference is correct. I wouldn't expect to be paid the same as another male or female if I was doing less in a job than then, tennis is no different and as soon as something goes against what they want it is far too easy to throw the race and sexism cards out, which then harms any true issues.
