for only one season I don't only think we'd be ok in terms of attracting players and keeping key ones but I also believe it would benefit us in the next league campaign. With less fixtures and travel, combined with a massive lowering of expectation (externally) we'll have one hell of a season next year i think.

we really need to beat portsmouth on saturday - thats our first step to long term success.

Most important game of the season for us to date.

I think you have to look at this as pros and cons and for me the pros outweigh:

Pros

1. Attracting players - being in the UEFA does undoubtedly attract some players but not others. If you've never played in Europe and you have the possibility of being drawn against Bayern in the Olympic Stadium then that's going to be a big plus
2. Money - whilst the UEFA is dwarfed by the CL it still brought in £2m in TV money + gate receipts + unquantifiable extra merchandising and brand exposure
3. Fans' enjoyment - nuff said (we'd rather be seeing our team play European games than not)
4. More games - this allows us to operate a bigger squad as we have more games to play them in and keep them happy
5. Player and team experience - gives them different styles and situations to play against/within and learn from

Cons

1. More games - equals some distraction from league, fatigue and possibility of injury

...and that's it really

Well said, of course we want to be in it, we'd prefer the cl, but those advocating a season out, it doesn't really matter are delusional. As for the quality issue, undoubtedly the cl has all the top sides, but there is some fairly mediocre sides in there as well. Slavia Prague are not that great and I can think of quite a few sides in the Uefa who are better than them. Countries with weak leagues get in, if Europe was a free for all, the likes of us and Everton would be in the cl not Uefa as our league is one of the strongest.

So I'm personally desperate for us to qualify again unfortunately we're gonna have to lift a trophy.

As for the league cup, why don't those idiots called the F.A leave the thing alone and call it the league cup sponsored by whoever, instead of changing the name every five minutes.

If we don't qualify for the UEFA Cup next season that will mean this season was a season of relative failure - whereas qualification could well be a reward for our best season since 1991, and certainly (barring releagation) it will have been a good season - so I'm looking for qualification thanks :)

talking of the UEFA I'm glad pol went thru last night - didn't want them in the last 32 or whenever - of the CL drop outs none of them look frightening -

I'm looking to qualify again so I can go to more away games in Europe. Because they are fun, and I'm selfish.

That's all.

But look at some of the makeweights in the CL. There are several better clubs in the UEFA Cup than some of those in the CL, ourselves included. To win it you do have to beat at least one decent side, this season more than most. But yes, there is a problem, and it started when UEFA caved in and allowed runners-up and then third and fourth placed sides from the big leagues to participate in the CL. We also have the group stage, allegedly to make the competition 'more exciting', but in reality to minimise the chances of Milan, say, going out early on to a bunch of bozos. In the process they seriously damaged the UEFA Cup, which until the changes was probably a far tougher competition to win.

Once upon a time and not so long ago it was equally as difficult if not even more difficult to win the UEFA cup than it was to win the European cup.

In the old format this season would have seen Man Utd in the big one and Spurs would've be joined by Arse and Liverpool in the UEFA whilst the Chavs would be in the Cup winners cup.

It's a shame how greed has all but wrecked this competition.

Under the current formats the CL is little more than a 16 club competition once the dross has been eliminated by the money making pretty crap group stage and the UEFA cup is total dross until the last 8 at best.

Having said that I am desperate to see Spurs in europe this, next and every season.

People say that the UEFA has no cachet or status, but it is kind of fun with the silly graphics changing each year, obscure TV coverage and never-heard-of opposition. Whilst the CL is a Very Very Important, almost life and death situation, with its annual Liverpool-Milan and Chelsea-Barcelona derbies. Personally I think the wafer is more stylish and more Spurs somehow - I'd rather win that than the CL until the scum win the CL and we are obliged to try.

I remember the last time we weren't in the UEFA, we almost finished 4th! I don't think it effects the purchasing of players as much as people think, I think players are more interested in playing for a good premier league club in london
