The Wembley pitch

Now that it's confirmed, I have one or two questions about the Wembley pitch and also about the new pitch at the New WHL.

1. Will we mark the Wembley pitch to the same dimensions as we have at present.
2. What will be the dimensions at the new WHL?
3. How similar will the playing surface be to WHL? (I understand most surfaces nowadays are a mix of natural grass and synthetic fibres.)
4. Who will be in charge of tending and maintaining the pitch? Wembley's groundsmen or ours? A mix of the two?

It probably gives rise to more questions than these but I haven't seen the issue discussed anywhere yet.

This might seem a bit OT, but I wouldn't start down this road... it gets confusing, with meters and yards and glaben and... Just open another beer, roll another smoke, don't go down this rabbit hole. :cautious:

1) No.

2) Bigger than WHL. See recent posts in the stadium thread for Prem standardisation on sizes.

3) Not sure, but we have a replica of the Wembley pitch (complete with synthetic weave) at the training ground.

4) Don't know.

One of the commentators mentioned during the semi-final that the grass was a bit longer at Wembley which means that the ball moves with less zip and slows the game down. Hopefully we can get them to cut it a bit shorter than usual to suit our style of play.

Not worried at all about the dimensions as we need to get used to the size for the new ground.

I read somewhere that our grounds men would be involved in some capacity when we move to Wembley.

Would make sense, we've been awarded the best pitch in the PL something like 5 out of the last 6 years or something like that.

I really hope we can do something about the Wembley pitch, because it sucks.

Every time we play there, every pass happens in slow motion because the pitch is too frigging slow!!

If we can speed it up to WHL standards, then I think we'll see a better Tottenham. For me it's not the size of the pitch, we play well at other grounds, it's the pace!

How comes it's so slow for us but not the team we play?

Monaco & Chelsea counter attacking football was fast and superb

It's not the pitch, it's the players. Even last night they were passing the ball so slowly that our opponents were in danger of intercepting the ball. Now, it could be a deliberate tactic to try and get our opponents to wear themselves out chasing the ball, but I think it's a false premise. We are far better off playing quick passes so that our opponents get dizzy and give up chasing the ball!

I think it might be an idea to.
We are lucky that we are in a position where can actually get used to playing at those dimensions now. The new stadium will be using the Wembley dimensions as that is now UEFA standard. With the old "phasing", we'd be diving right into the new stadium with the bigger pitch straight from the smaller pitch at the Lane. Would be bafflingly stupid and extremely short sighted of the club to change the dimensions at Wembley.

I think it might be an idea to.

It's short term thinking though as the New Lane will have a bigger pitch than WHL. If the pitch size was the issue we'd struggle at loads of other grounds too.

If we shrink Wembley then we'd start saying it was in issue after a few losses at the New Lane.

Wembley has always looked like a very soft surface, if we're allowed to do anything it should be *cut it shorter and make it firmer...*

*Story of my life :( :bag:

It's not about the counters, that you can do into space and with drive. But it always struck me that the shorter passes, or attempted through balls stuck or bobbled as the ball was played and lacked the zip we see at WHL or other grounds even.

There is definitely something odd with the Wembley pitch and I've been saying it since it opened (even before Spurs played on it).

With regards to pitch size, this was on BBC today:

Where possible, Premier League pitches now have to be 105m x 68m but White Hart Lane only measured 100m x 67m and there was no room to extend it. Wembley's pitch is usually 105m x 69m but will be changed to 105m x 68m for Tottenham's Premier League games in 2017-18, the same size as the pitch will be at their new stadium

Both Leicester and Hulls pitch size is 105 x 68, didn't seem to cause us many problems. I think we will be fine, with any luck we'll get some favourable opening fixtures at home for next season. If we can get off to a good start then everything should settle down.
