In professional football the captains most important role is off the pitch. On the pitch I expect ‘leaders’ throughout the spine of the team.

There's something in the book about this. He picks someone who represents the club in the fashion desired by the manager and chairman. I actually think we have a few who could skipper based on those attributes.
Poch mentions in the book that he often gets Hugo, Jan & Harry involved in meetings, and tasks them with the responsibilities of making sure the other players get the message.
The problem is those are also relatively quite individuals and don't come across as players who will get angry when they need to.
Hugo can't put an arm around Dele or Son mid-game and gee them up a bit, unless we want to leave the goal empty.

There should be a leader in defence and midfield anyway, and sometimes it feels like that's where we lack.
We need someone who's head won't drop when the going gets tough.

That's Kane. Poch says in the book that Harry might have the best mental strength of any player in the world.

“Kane is a warrior now. He already was, but he didn’t know he had it in him. I’m not speaking about qualities or traits, but that essential mental strength to be able to stay in the elite. I believe he is the best player in the world in terms of mental strength, willpower and endeavour.

And some people had the audacity to question his mental strength after Stoke. He's had questions marks over his head every single season from the get go about whether he could do it consistently and he keeps responding by getting better every season. The bloke is a machine

Always preferred a CM as captain, someone in the middle of the action, how much input can Lloris give Kane or vice versa for that matter, out of who we have now I'd have to say Dier, he's not my favorite player but he can be vocal and isn't afraid of a tackle.

Years ago the captain had the authority to change tactic during a game, so it was an important job, and needed the right person to be able to react to the game. Not quite the same now. I prefer an outfield player as captain too. Had Toby been staying, he would have been my choice, but Jan or Dier would both make good captains. All academic though as Lloris has the job!

Honestly amount of times I've had this argument with my Dad is insane, I mean the argument reared it's head again vs juventus and I had to point out their keeper was captain. Not to mention that Spain, the best international team arguably of all time had a keeper as captain. Fact is people like are either leaders or they aren't, no armband is going to suddenly make a player more or less of a leader.

We have good leaders imo Lloris Dier Vertonghen Kane above all that I believe we have overall a solid bunch of lads.

Pochettinho has done fantastic really with our mentality this year step by step it's definitely changing ie all that Wembley hoodoo talk you'd think we'd be relegated how the media went on, winning at Stamford Bridge was massive imo after 28 years and also this might sound silly to some, that Leicester game last game of the season having in recent time stumbled at St James was mentally important we won even with the world cup to come Pochettinho really done an excellent job consider this Manchester United and City spend in excess of £400M net compared to our £ 50M.
