Time for an onfield skipper?

Well the season is done and it has been a pleasing one. However, personally I believe that having a keeper as captain has cost us this season. Lloris is a fine keeper but the absence of an on field organiser / motivator is a weakness for any side. Sometimes in those clutch moments it is good to have someone to shake them up;)

If Lamela was a guaranteed starter I’d want him to be the on field captain. He’s got drive, aggression and the will to win. He can also take Poch’s instructions unincumbered by the clunky English language.

Liking it. I'm guessing Lamela's team talks as captain would go something like this...

You don't need an armband to be a leader.

I think Lloris is a respected professional. Not only with us but throughout Europe. As long as he is first choice. I think he deserves to keep the armband.

I think increasingly in the modern game that sort of player is quite difficult to find, at the top level at least.

The Roy Keane, Carlos Puyol, lead-by-example and tear into anyone whose standards drop is really lacking from the game for a variety of the usual reasons. I certainly think that we’d have fared better in the two big cup games we lost if we’d had a player like that.

I think the closest guy in the squad is Vertonghen. Dier probably next in line.

The main role of a club captain if off the field, representing players and all that to the manager and board. On the field everyone should be a captain and the idea that wearing an armband makes a big difference, just don't believe it.

Anyway some the most iconic captains and successful teams have goalkeepers as captains, Casillas, Zoff, Buffon, Neuer. I don't think not having an outfield captain would make a jot of difference to what happened this season. We have a clear hierarchy of captains anyway and its Lloris then Kane then Vertonghen.

I think we do need a leader outfield. Lloris can't drive the team forward. For me it needs to be a CB or CM that puts in 100%. Right now it's Vertonghen. For me the future, I would like Harry Winks. I think when he plays well he drives us, much like Iniesta does Barca. That's what we need.

Frankly, I’ve never seen the point of the onfield skipper. He turns up, shakes hands at the beginning of the game, shouts and points a bit, and occasionally chats to the referee, but, that apart, what does he actually do?

No, hang on, that’s the Anfield skipper, not onfield. Carry on.

I don't think stripping Lloris from the captaincy will make no changes. One thing is being the skipper, doing teamtalk etc, but as a team the team will lead each other on the field. The defense doing their bit, midfield and forwards

Imo the next skipper will be Kane

I’ve never understood this way of thinking that only the captain can lead, or that you somehow stand around saying nothing to your teammates during matches unless you’ve got the armband.

Hugo is Pochs extension and representative on the pitch. He's also a respected and authoritative figure for his club and country. That's why he's captain.

The armband doesn't prevent anyone else from being a leader. We have Kane, Moose, Dier and Jan who are all strong, vocal and lead by example types.

You never strip an existing captain of the captaincy unless he has done something grave (far beyond a couple of poor decision). The reason for why Lloris is captain is not down to what meets the eye during matches or in the media. It's for everything he is in the locker room, in training and in all circumstances that are not usually open for fans to pass verdicts on.

Definitely needed a leader, captain or otherwise, during those few minutes VS Juventus when we conceded 2

Either that, or one of our lads should have feigned injury for a couple of minutes to break up the momentum of the game

Need to 'box-smart', especially against the savvy street-fighters that Juventus are
