“Will need movement from both sides to happen”

What a surprise. It’s always the same old story. We won’t pay the money to get these players over the line. If we want to sign someone like Werner in January and get a march on our rivals, and salvage something of this season seeing as we’ve lost out two highest goalscorers for a minimum of a month, we will need to pay a premium.

Seems very very very unlikely that this happens since....

1) It's January so you have to pay more
2) Kane's injury puts us over the barrell and other teams know that. Our leverage is zero. Quoted prices probably went up 15-20% at the end of the Man U match.
3) Kane is best striker in world so anyone coming will have to compete with him (and Son and Alli and etc)

So IMO Trix and JJ are saying Spurs are definitely interested and probably even inquiring with the club and player, but realistically the numbers it would take to make happen are just too much for Spurs. Trix also first stated they are investigating loans and Werner doesn't appear to be a player that would be loaned out.

I hope I am wrong. Levy knows the stakes going into next year (Losing potentially Eriksen, Poch, and Champions League all at once destroys us). Hopefully something can get done.

Could be a loan with a view to permanent move? Trix has also just said movement from both parties needed so maybe they would want a chunk of that fee in the initial loan?

There is so much in this, that makes it seem extremely unlikely.

Werner's the starting striker for the german national team, and is primed to go to Bayern, with their ageing squad needing a serious overhaul in the summer. Lewandowski probably has at most 2 more seasons left on top level, and interest from Madrid is rumoured. Leipzig might not want to sell to Bayern, but it usually ends up that way, as almost every german player wants to play for them.

Werner would certainly be looking to play regularly, so unless we're regularly going to play with two strikers, I don't see us being a realistic choice for him.

On the other hand I remember that we were interested in him in the summer of '15 along with Martial, were we ended up signing Son instead. So our interest is probably longstanding. At the time I think he was considered more of a wing-forward though.

Would love this to happen. He can replace Alli in the attacking line and would be a better fit for it. Alli can then move back into CM and would help us cover another spot in the squad we're lacking in.

Appreciate all the Werner info from the ITK's, signing him in January would be a massive statement of intent and would bring back the feel good factor to Spurs, Come on Mr Levy....grow a pair and prove all the doubters wrong !. COYS

Sounds like you think that “Will need movement from both sides to happen” means its dead in the water whereas to me it sounds like negotiation.

I'd be very surprised if we get another top striker. I think we'll need to uncover a gem to cover for Kane. Not much chance a top player who wants regular first team football joins a club with Kane, Son, Alli, Lamela, Moura and Eriksen. I can see him joining a club who is in need of a first teamer. Not to say he wouldn't get in our team but you would prefer your chances at a club without that much competition like us.

There are three sides, though, if you include the player. Four if you add the agents. It's a wonder transfers ever get done...
You need the 2 sides to agree before the player and agent even get involved though. This sounds like a long way off for this window. Maybe one to revisit in the summer. He's worth trying for at least.

It's quite depressing that the last couple of windows have left the majority of us fans so pessimistic about our ability to sign players...

You're right. My pessimism comes from nowhere other than our long track record of being unable to sign players of the quality of Werner.

Pretty much all our top players we have now, have been years in the making, punts on unknown players a tier or two down that no other top club wants to gamble on.

When it comes to trying to get a player who could come in and hit the ground running, a major signing, we never ever do it.

Even Sanchez, our record signing, was just potential and came in initially as a squad player. Let's be honest, hardly any of us knew of him before the story broke.

Every single window, literally every single window, when we are linked to a top player, an ITK will say "We are too far apart in valuation" or, "needs movement from both sides'.

Levy simply will not pay up to acquire a top player from another club. I'd loved to be proved wrong but we all know how this goes, we will end up loaning the 2019 equivalent of Raziak.

The whole “we have no money!!!” And “he wouldn’t join us!!!” argument Is such a non-starter.

He would join us. We’re a significantly bigger club than RBL, we play in a better league, we consistently qualify for European football, we (will) have a better stadium and we could probably double his wages. He’s still very young and i’m sure would love the opportunity to work under Poch and work with the best striker in the world.

We do have money. There’s plenty of reason to believe that we were prepared to spend £50m on a player. We’ve had reports that we were willing to match whatever price was set for De Jong, which will likely be £60m+ and we’ve heard that we matched Chelsea’s bid for Pulisic, which was basically confirmed by Dortmund too. £50m, given Werner’s contract situation, would be enough to get him.

The only reason he doesn’t sign now is because 1. We were never interested, 2. Someone bigger than us goes for him or 3. RBL refuse any offers until the summer.
