If we don’t sign him now then someone else will in the summer. But at least we will be able to look in from afar and say ‘at least we tried’

We refuse to act early and sign on potential and then won’t spend bigger when potential has proven itself. We can look at the example of Alli but that’s a one-off. That success should have made us try it more often!

Alli was a one off.
So was Eriksen.
So was Sanchez.
So was Son.
So was Rose.
So was Vertonghen.
So was Dier.

That’s a lot of current first choice players of very high quality who were one off signings of potential.

Other one off signings of potential who have quite proven themselves as top class but have still proven to be very useful are:

Davies
Trippier
Aurier
Lamela
Foyth (could still be great).
Gazzaniga (could still be great).

We also never sign the finished article, except for when we signed:

Llorus
Alderweireld
Wanyama
Dembele
Sissoko
Lucas
Llorente

Would be a great signing and we apparently have circa 100M (less than what I would have assumed considering not spend in the summer) to spend so it should be able to get done. And with the ITK about Isco (why does he have no transfer player page?) we would really make a statement. Imagine Isco picking out Werner on the counter. sure we wouldn't have addressed our MF or FBs but with all that offense who needs those things. I say we do it and get the big names that everyone recognizes to make a statement.

Well if this is going to happen it needs to happen pretty quickly, we can’t afford to wait for the usual from Daniel Levy of waiting until the end of the window in the hope of getting a lower price.
This maybe a situation where Levy's tactics may work, as they'll know he'll be worth even less come the summer

Werner does look a great player however if we willing to spend circa 50mil should we not look at Callum Wilson who will also alleviate pressure on HG requirements and has experience in the league?

Wilson is 27, two big ligament injuries, would be a large risk on somebody who will have little sell on value imo. I was shocked to find out he was 27.

Edit: 27 in a month

Sanchez is our record buy. Eriksen and Vertonghen well down the road to being established internationals. Son was already hugely well known. Il give you Rose and Dier but the other four weren’t exactly total punts.

I wouldn't want us to drop half that on Wilson. He's had two cruciates.

£50m on Callum Wilson? How long have you supported Spurs for mate? There's literally Moreno chance of Hoddle playing for us again than us doing that sort of money on Wilson

I had no idea who Son was when that deal sprung up. Or Vertonghen, thinking back.

No thanks to Wilson. Will cost a fortune, he's not exactly prolific. He'd has serious injuries recently and no sell on value. I don't care much about resale value if the player is top quality, but Wilson is not that calibre. Would reek of desperation.

Without being disrespectful, that maybe says more about your knowledge of European football. Vertonghen maybe to a degree but Son was fairly well known surely? Maybe I watch too many matches!

Seem to remember the vast majority on here hadn't heard of him but I'm certainly not the football geek I was when I was a kid.

Their 'stacked' is pretty much man for man the same as ours. Salah (Kane), Firmino (Alli), Mane (Son), Shaqiri (Eriksen), Sturridge (Lucas), Lallana (Lamela), Origi (Llorente). Then theres a kid in Brewster who simply hasn't played.

Man for man I would say we at least draw those battles.

Its easy to look stacked without injuries.

You compared origi with llorente?
