Nothing to worry about as far as I'm concerned, 2 years left on current deal, no clause, and if we do extend by a year on our option then there will be a release clause of £25m on a 30 year old defender in the last year of his deal. Hopefully we do sign him up again soon for at least 4 or 5 years from now but no need to be concerned for at least another season.
I'm sorry but I don't get it. We've signed up all our other key players in the last 12 months. Why are we not extending Toby's contract ?

Oh it's not that I'm not worried about someone tempting him, it's more that we won't get screwed because of a running down contract as in effect he's still got three to go and that final year he'll be turning 31 by the end of that season. Hence why I said 'no need to be concerned for at least another season'.

My concern (and i don't think even Levy would leave it this late) is that if Citeh came in for him, we have little if any time to replace him.

We wouldn't sell him that late in the window I'm confident...

Id guess he'll sign early September. To strengthen the point about how comfortable we are- even in the event of him getting to the final year of his contract 2 years from now at 30 and the 25 million release clause which won't be too far off of market value when you compare it for what the best 30 year old defender of the last decade has gone for in Bonnucci.... At threat point after a year of money in our new stadium we will have entered into the financial big leagues and will have the capacity to offer him equivalent wages to anyone except for up heaving himyself to the Manchester clubs who will likely want younger tall nuts by then anyway.

According to this article in Sky Sports if we don't do something about deleting a current contract clause we could lose him for as little as £25m...

already posted a couple of pages back and discussed, nothing to worry about buddy, the clause only becomes relevant if we extend his contract for an added year (we have that option) and would only be active in his final year, a season where he will start 30years old and finish 31 years old.

If that clause were there now, pretty sure someone would have triggered it.

Duly deleted my friend...thanks for the heads up.

Whichever side of the "we need to sign players" debate you might be I can't understand why we haven't concluded a contract extension for Toby. It's all very well to tell the media Poch is happy with the squad and we aren't going to join the transfer madness, we have a stadium to build etc. but I just can't see any excuse for why we haven't concluded Toby's contract extension. This for me is the most concerning aspect of our lack of player activity this summer. There is no other club to negotiate with so really no excuses. This is just down to Levy. If he can't get this done we really should be deeply worried.
Can't believe some are spamming you....they look foolish now after he just said there's no progress.

Perhaps Poch thinks "it is an ideal situation" to run down the contracts of star players. :ROFLMAO:

I think if the thread had been started after his quotes the responses would look very different. I'm still stunned at how seemingly relaxed people are by his comments. It's almost Wengeresque.

After a terrible transfer window last year led to a 2nd place finish I really think people have put their feet up. Easy this football business. And now if you suggest it's not all gravy, you get last seasons transfer window thrust in your face. So we'll see but I'm far from content with what we have done so far in terms of games, contracts and signings. Glad other people are tho

He's under contract for 3 more seasons. What's to worry about?
He has 2 more years before he is available at a fixed price. Every single one of our other senior players have had their contracts extended in the last year but our best defender and probably the best CH in the league hasn't extended his contract. That doesn't bother you at all ? Does it imply to you that all is well in the relationship between Toby and the club ?

Why spend days, weeks, months, years worrying about something you have no control over.

Sit back, grab a beer, sleep with loads of prostitutes, enjoy life and let the people at the club who are paid to worry about this sort of thing do their jobs. If they don't, then rant.

Just my advice. Take it or leave it, your choice, makes no difference to me.

That's the one good thing about levy and that is he won't allow a player or his agent to wind down a contract and leave for either free or considerably less.
If he hasn't signed by the end of the season then yes levy would sell for a decent price, but I feel he will sign a new deal eventually and then sold for a record fee :D

Doesn't bother me at all. If he wants to extend his contract, great. If not, no skin off my back. What if he signs a long term deal and suffers a major injury? What if he doesn't sign a long term deal this year, has a great season, and signs a more lucrative deal next season with us? Who knows what will happen?

But I'm not going to get worried about a guy that is essentially guaranteed to play for us for the next two seasons.

Of which probably 90% involve beer and prostitutes. :)

Have to disagree, if Ledley hadn't been injured he would have been the outstanding defender of his day! Whether he would have stayed with us is another matter.

My point is King never got to level of Toby...of course injuries was the cause and so we never got to truly see him at his best. we will never know how good he could have been. But nobody can argue that Toby is the best centre half we have had in years. Maybe even ever

Your opinion but I disagree. Which other country would take a player with one knee to the world cup if he wasn't a bad ass! That aside, King almost single handedly carried our defence at times, as he didn't have the quality of full and centre backs and keeper all playing together that Toby has to support him.
