The money isn't the issue it's the release clause he wants in his contract.

Do we know what the detail of the release clause is? Just related to a mega club coming in? Or activates if we don't qualify for the CL?

Apparently wants a £25m release clause so that if a clubs bids for that we'd have to accept it, not sure why he would want that but I've always had this nagging feeling that he wants to return to Ajax in his latter years and a relatively low fee like that would be affordable for them.

Deffo wouldn't go for that, unless the clause only kicks in in say four years time, even then £25m sounds a little cheap!

I too thought it was an answer to a Goat cryptic along with Dier. Elsewhere it was also suggested it'll be sorted in September. Guess we have 25 days left.

I've got this nagging feeling that he knows he could earn three times more somewhere else, he isn't stupid. It's not really something very surprising, people thinking about money. We all do.

Let's ne honest here considering the CB options of United, City, Chelsea and Liverpool he would walk into any of their first te line up and get paid 2-3 times as much as he is now. Let's not say that this release clause is the sticking point. His representative has said the same and remember how he joined us from Southampton. I luv the guy but he seems to know his value and what he wants.

He didn't cost us much and we still have 2-3 years left? And by that stage he will be what 31. I hope we get her him third down but I'm not pegging my hopes and dreams on it.

Actually, I'd take a £25m release clause in 4 years time. We'd get the remaining 'best years' out of him and we'd have £25m to spend on the next up and coming 19 year old CB, when the time came.

Also, by then Sanchez would be 25 years old and coming into his prime!

That said, it'd have to be a 6 or 7 year contract so I very much doubt this would happen :)

Yep, pay him what he wants to keep him happy for the next 4 years and then have a sensible release fee. By then I am sure that Sanchez and Foyth will be beasts anyway!

If it wasn't the answer to the cryptic, what are the chances of a cryptic been posted that is accidentally an anagram of 'tobias dier new deals'?

If I'm understanding it right, currently he has 2 years left on his contract at circa 75k pm, and if the club extends it for a year under its option, a 25M release clause is activated. Citeh or the like would snap him up at that price and double his wages. So, if no deal is done this season, pressure mounts on us to sell next summer (2018) to avoid having to sell him for 25M under the release clause in summer 2019. Since the 2019 release clause is 25M, we would only sell him in 2018 if we are offered substantially more than that. So, while it is complicated, it is not a disastrous situation. Bottom line is we know we have him for 2 years and a 3rd year unless we are paid 25M in the last year. If he doesn't sign a new contract, we have to decide when it's best to let him go.

My guess is that Spurs are willing to pay him 100k - 125k (assuming 125k is our current top wage) for a fixed, probably 5-year, contract but Toby wants either (I) more than that if there is no release clause, since this may be his last significant contract and he knows he could get considerably more if he plays a few years for citeh et al or (ii) a release clause to kick in at some point, though if he still wants it to apply from 2019, my guess is the amount would be bumped up considerably to, say, 50M. Or a bit of both!

We got him for a bargain price. He is a top defender and i rate him higher than say Ledley... (Purely on his ability and being relatively injury free).

We need to keep him and give him the contract commensurate with his value to the team... Letting him run down his contract or selling him like we did with Walker would be crazy....

If he is posturing or hesitant to take the deal we offering i cant blame him.... This is his last big contract.

Poch's press conference today;

"He was talking with me in my office this morning and he’s so happy, he wants to make it clear he is fully committed with the club.

"He’s happy with his contract, two years plus one. It’s not an issue

"I recognise some rumours in the last few days. But he is so relaxed, so calm.

"His idea is to try to play here -- he’s happy here, there’s no reason to move."

If my calculations are correct and if transfer fees continue at the current trajectory, my cat will be worth £25m in four years, and he's been dead for 18 months.

RIP Barney, you were really rubbish at being a cat.
