Classic agent ploy to put out there that a moneybags rival with a defensive hole is preparing a bid when negotiating a contract. This is all part of the contract games.

It's clear that peps strategy for dominating the premiership is to weaken their opponents by buying their best players....what a great manager:whistle:

Or, like most managers, if he feels he can sign a top player already proven in this league he does. Which is pretty much why we signed Toby, Wanyama, Vorm, Llorente, Davies, Trippier, Dembele and Sissoko (oops).

Also, you are talking about a guy who took a side who were already amongst the best around and, without much change, improved them into a side that dominated all before them for over half a decade. That's coaching and tactics, not throwing money at things. Of his core signings only David Villa and Dani Alves already played in Spain.

I wonder how well he would get on if he swapped jobs with Chris Hughton and became manager of Brighton? I imagine Hughton would finish top 4, and pep to be in a relegation fight

The comment I responded to implied that without money to spend Guardiola isn't capable, this is ridiculous. Yes, he spends high amounts, the players required to execute what he wants tend to cost money, but he has also more than proven himself as a fantastic coach and an exemplary tactician. He's now working the hardest job he ever had because he is in the most conietwtive league, so naturally he's not been as successful so far, but any implication that he is anything but a fantastic manager is bonkers.

Also, money doesn't guarantee success, not by any stretch of the imagination. It helps, but if you don't have a manager who can motivate, who can coach, who can find solutions to issues. Leicester winning the league should show you that, because for one season Ranieri outfoxed everyone.

No doubt Pep is a good coach but I don't think he is as good as his press. He doesn't seem that great at improving players through coaching, for example, did he make Stones a better player last year ? I might have my Spurs tinted specs on but I think the best 2 coaches in England are Conte and Poch. Could Pep improve Victor Moses in the way Conte did ? I doubt it.

Also much like Klopp while Pep's teams are devastating going forward it isn't obvious he can organise a team to defend.

A great coach makes the team more than the sum of its parts. Conte and Poch have both done this, Pep did for a while at Barca with a once in a lifetime crop of homegrown talent including the greatest player ever but he certainly didn't do that at Bayern and hasn't done yet at City either.

I wasn't trying to suggest pep isn't a decent manager...just that he likes the cards to be stacked in his favour. He won titles in both Spain and Germany which is obviously a good achievement. it's just that both leagues are very uncompetitiv, and the same couple of teams win time and time again.

I used the example of Chris Hughton because he works with very few resources and shows huge strength of character...he doesn't give up. The same steel hasn't been shown by pep yet.

If Hughton keeps Brighton up this year, I think that would be as big an achievement as pep winning the league with city

This will be difficult business and it's obvious why:

1) We've been the best defensive team last few seasons and Toby's the main reason.
2) Great injury record and pedigree. No doubt he could play in any team in PL
3) 28 is a good age. Similar to Rose this would be his last chance to get big money and to play at the highest level; e.g. your Barcelonas/Real

On the other hand I'm also pleased with how we have handled this situation so far:

1) Found potential replacements for him in Sanchez/Foyth. Both are capable of spraying long passes to the full backs from deep.
2) His performances have been professional and consistent.
3) For someone of his ability there will always be interest. However he hasn't behaved disrespectfully to the club. He is a class act.

And while I'm at it, it's obvious that Toby's a better player than Ledley, if you think about it logically:

1) With Toby we've been competing in CL, and we are genuine title contenders. With Ledley we weren't even close to this level. This means week-in-week-out Toby's up against better players and thrived, compared to Ledley
2) Injury record speaks for itself.
3) Toby's long passes and goals are weapons that Ledley doesn't have. Defensive-ability wise i think they are similar.

No way Toby better than Ledley.

Also as I have stated before if Poch believes Toby deserves to have a premium contract then he will see to it.

Hard to know what is really going on. I think at his age Toby would like a good contract. At Spurs I get the impression there is a lot of pay based on performance rather than just a nice huge guaranteed wage but of course I don't know. It would be great for us to secure the services of Toby on a new decent length contract which no doubt everyone at the club wants. I expect this to be sorted out but it may take until the end of this year if Toby is waiting to see how we do on the pitch and off it with naming rights etc. If he sees winning things as a real possibility with great financial rewards then maybe he will stay in a team he looks so comfortable in

Had he got 2 or 3 years left ?

There was talk in the summer that we'd wait and see what money was left after the transfer window and then look at new contracts for key players, so duscussions may have only recently started with him.

I've read he has 2 left with an option of a 3rd, something about a 25 mil buy out clause too but not sure of the details, it will be in this thread somewhere.

If you put Toby in Ledley's era team, and Ledley in today's team i suspect the results would be worse then and about the same now.

who is really?

not seen anything like it. the grace, speed, timing, reading of the game.
what a pity about the injury, the world didn't really get to see what we saw
