Fucking ding dong.

Honestly amazes me the amount of head up arse, delusional naivety shown by what seems like reasonably intelligent people when it comes to football, particularly the financial or non pitch stuff.

Fans of clubs seem incapable of grasping that football doesn’t exist entirely in a bubble exempting it from basic human and economic principles.

We all recognise the qualities of Alderweireld, but cries of “just break the wage structure Levy” are stupid. There is a wage structure for a reason, and those reasons aren’t arbitrary, if you break it for one player, there is no more structure.

And on a footballing perspective it’s really not a catastrophe. We’ve just added a fantastic looking CB in Sanchez. But we also have Dier. When Alderweireld was Dier’s age he was no better. In fact he couldn’t even get a game at AM as a CB most weeks, he had to take a loan move to Mid table Southampton to revive his career.

Dier is the absolute perfect, almost facsimile, replacement for Alderweireld, but probably even ahead of TA’s development curve.
The first bold bit - I think that there are a lot of people (the anti-BSoDL if you like) who seem to believe that those reasons are arbitrary and entirely of Levy's choosing. That's why we get the endless debates that we do.

The second bold bit - is it not in the book that Poch(e?) has told Dier that he will make him the best English centre back?

I agree with this, but it's not so much losing Alderweireld, it's losing him to a rival again. He is a higher standard than City's current crop of centre backs. No guarantees any alternative they may sign from abroad would hit the ground running like Toby likely would.

When MP states very clearly that nothing is happening in 18 months, then I think we should relax a
little - I don't think this release clause is as enforceable as Toby thinks.

What is concerning is what alderweireld is trying to put in the next contract - it might not be the size of the release that is problem, but rather the rancid list of poisonous clubs that he might demand we negotiate with.

I think Toby must know what is enforceable. It's unlikely he's got some no-mark SC forumer to advise him

Perhaps he has. Although, it didn't seem that way at Southampton, on loan there, did it?

Here's my tuppence worth. I think he would sign for 100k a week on a five year deal, with an option to renegotiate upwards after 3 years. Forget VVD. If some tosser signs a wanker and pays him a fortune, it's nothing to do with me

Why sign? He's won SFA elsewhere. He could win SFA here but you look at the team and think it's much more likely. Are you comfortable? Are you starting regularly? Are the wages sufficient?

The "project" - new stadium, Poch, Kane, the footballing philosophy, France's captain, Dele, contentment at a growing club. I'm a Spurs fan, so biased.

I totally agree but the posters with an agenda don't talk about the release clause, they simply say give him the contract. They either fail to see the fact that giving him a new contract with a realise clause could see us losing him sooner than we do if we don't offer him a new contract.

gain I love Toby but I support Tottenham not the player, some supporters should remember that. No mater what we offer him, there are other clubs who are at a higher lever than us and offer much more than we can, both money wise and with regards to winning trophies.

Sorry mate but ur pulling figures out of ur rectum and ideas out of the air, ur totally ignoring the fact he wants a release clause. If City want him he will not win SFA there. Players want 2 things, money and silverware, unfortunately there are 2-3 others clubs in our league alone that can offer him more money and a history of winning more silverware.

Right, if you can't beat them, join them.

Why/when did The Nou Camp change to Camp Nou??

I'm sure Suarez thought his release clause was solid, but in practise, it only meant Liverpool had to consider the bid. They could still turn it down.

MP is usually so evasive in his interviews - he would not even nominate his favourite xmas song the other week - but here he is, saying with absolute certainty that nothing is happening in 18 months.
He is almost certainly quoting Levy directly who would have had this checked out before the clause was even presented in the first place, probably even looked over by one the the top mark 'forumers' on SC.

So I'm not worried about this clause. But there is obviously some kind of problem with his new contract - perhaps the whole thing might be a cover for a different issue - maybe he plays in a lot of pain these days? Who knows?

If I was an agent I'd recommend all my clients (with less than 2 years to go) let their contracts run down as they will get a much bigger pay day if the threat is there that they can leave on Bosman. Purely as their value to would be suitors goes up as there is no fee. This is often then reflected in a 'signing on fee' which is similar to a fee but paid to the player over the course of his contract rather than to the selling club, boosting their weekly wages significantly. This is more relevant to Arsenal's Sanchez or Everton's Barkley at present that Toby (as he still has 2.5 years to run on his contract). Why would Barkley move for say £15-20M now when he can move in the summer for free and get 7 or 8 million as a 'signing on bonus'? It would effectively make his wages at a club like ours £150k per week instead of £100k per week. Yes, there is the prospect of forcing his way into the World Cup squad, but I am sure if he is fit at Everton that Big Sam will play him whether he signs a contract or not as Big Sam wants to finish as high in the league as possible.

With Toby we are talking about a clause that is not activated for 1.5 years, and would net us £25M in a worst case scenario, and he still has 2.5 years on his contract left. I am hoping that next season, in our new world class stadium, the likes of Toby and Harry (and Dele and Christian and ...etc) all have their minds blown by what a great club on the up we are, and that Levy will be able to increase the wage ceiling in light of increased revenue.

Seems like Man City are looking to Spain for their centrebacks going forward. I don’t think we have to worry about them going for Toby too.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola wants to spend £50m to reinforce his squad, with Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, 29, and Real Sociedaddefender Inigo Martinez, 26, both targets. (Sun)

Premier League leaders Manchester City are also interested in 24-year-old Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti. (L'Equipe - in French)
