arsescum mania is priceless today. they are so distraught. i was worried when they signed mertesacker as he is quality, but vermin going out injured putting the utter toss that is Koscielny in his place is awesome. he is so bad it's ridiculous, and the rest of the team in general don't really position themselves too well on attacks... maybe sometimes but not enough.

i thought they would pip us too 5th but now i think we will finish ahead of them if our midfield link up with our strikers nicely. Tall order for us to finish top 4 though.

Why?

Think it is going to be a close scrap between us, scum and Liverpool.

Liverpool will be Average when "kennymania" dies down, and Chelsea have added one good player to an average/slow/ageing squad.

I think Mertesacker is going to be a flop, mainly because of the system he's going into rather than his quality(although I don't think he's all that anyway). Arsenal like to play a high line and attempt to play an offside trap. He's too slow for that and I think he will get caught out a lot.

How rubbish is Howard Webb?
He missed a sending off which was like the german goalkeeper on the Frenh bloke in the 82World Cup.

Was impressed by the young striker at Everton,Apostolos Vellios.............only 19 and looks like a real footballer in the making.

You don't rate Lukaku or Mereiles?

And Sturridge is essentially "new" as well.

They also made what I think will turn out to be the best signing of the window in Thibault Courtois, although he's out on loan now.

I just got around to watching Blackburn Arsenal. I was actually interested more in Blackburn, as I wrote an article last week about how they could save their system. Basically...1) old fullbacks - protect them. 2) Get a better CM pairing.

Kean did everything he could to protect them today, shifting Hoilett, who had been brutal (a good term in attack, a terrible one in defense) on the left to the right to protect Givet. And then bringing Olsson on to provide more solidity. An early injury forced him to bring the kid Lowe back from CM to RB and give Rakovic a try. He needed to get up to pace but by the 2nd half, he took Arteta out of the game and had a solid passing performance. But mostly he freed Nzonzi (culpable for 1st two goals) from being the DM. It worked as you can see. Meanwhile Lowe did a good job as an 18 year old CM as RB against that attack. If not for the Yak, he'd be my MOTM.

But a few notes on Arsenal. They suffer from what I saw as Blackburn's biggest issue. They have Song (who was brilliant in the pass) as a DM. Blackburn had tried this with Nzonzi. He should be a double six passer with a more dogged CM protecting. Different flow if Frimpong was in for Arshavin...say. But really, we dodged such a massive bullet on AA. Passes were something like 90 for Ramsey, 80 for Arteta, 60 for Gervinho and Song...30 for AA. I thought Econ Jacques would have seen that much sooner.

Also we shouldn't get too high. They are vulnerable to set pieces.....we have none  But that, like us a few years back, is a coaching thing. The big thing is that for a team that is blessed with pace, they panic as soon as they see it. Hoilett just ran them ragged. Olsson caused them issues too. I have yet to see the United Arsenal game but I bet it's important.

And the other thing....Good for Kean. I know he gets a lot of stick, but I've been watching and he is constantly working to find his best side. It was just that today an injury might have provided that.
