I actually think it's beneficial to see both sides of a player.

How a player plays in a team in good form with the crowd behind them may not tell you as much as how well they play in a team desperate for form and with the crowd against them...

Think Derby is a good fit for him, get game experience in a team that compete well in a tough division, better than losing every week with wigan, not much of a confidence builder!!

http://dcfc-craic.forumotion.net/t11376-the-problem-with-tom-carroll

- The problem I have with Tom Carroll is that he is a lightweight in an
already lightweight midfield. He can pick a pass and his quick one touch
football reminds me of an early John McGovern, so he has got promise,
but that's all it is at this stage. It would make sense playing him if
we were grooming him for a future at Derby County but as I understand it
there is no chance of that. I would rather bring on one of our own
youngsters. There seems to be a swell of differing opinions over Carroll, but lets not forget we have not won since he has been introduced into the team and would fear for him in a full blooded red hot game with that lot down the A52.

- He played well against Leicester, second-half. The manager himself not one to dish out praise lightly was very complimentary. Same for Birmingham, the lad has ability and I like good footballers playing for us.

- He is too lightweight, he isn't strong enough which is why he has made no impact on the team whatsoever. Playing well for one half and making one good pass does not make him an excellent footballer, far from it.

- Its nothing to do with him being to light or weak, he still has some maturity to reach physically, he is not yet fully developed but he can play and he will get better with more games, getting used to the league and our style of play.Again if you are of the opinion you need to be tall or heavy to play football then your opinion is wrong. The greatest footballer who has ever lived in terms of all-round achievement was 5 foot 5. The best player alive today is 5 foot 7.

- As usual you are not prepared to read anybody else's post properly. Nobody has said that they have an opinion that all footballers should be tall or heavy. That is just you. What I said was that Carroll was too lightweight and he is and it shows in his play. He is not strong enough for the Championship, nowhere near. He gets pushed off the ball too much, in my opinion.

- No I think it's you not reading mine to be honest. You clearly said he is too lightweight, which to me is well off the mark.A lot of the time when he is pushed off the ball he is fouled, in the rules and the refereeing in England does allow a lot of fouling, which is a major problem in our game. He does need to adapt, it takes him and Hendrick a while to get into games but when they get going they play some decent stuff. Which has been sadly lacking most of this season, although Hendrick was our best player first 2 months of the season.

seems like (with the exception of Kane) all our loanees have emulated our season and fallen off the radar.

My mates (all season ticket holders and semi pros) all said he is good but Clough never plays him, at the moment Clough is not popular at all with the fans

To be fair he has been played out of position when he has been at Derby and he is no way a winger so this is one of the reason why he hasn't imposed himself here

As beats1 points out, loans don't always go perfectly for various reasons - managers not playing them, playing them out of position.

Not to mention the player has to settle into a new team etc.

Reading a few of the Derby comments and from what i've seen i'm inclined to agree. Carroll is still developing as a player not only in a football sense but physically. I'd be inclined to say that his footballing ability is a little ahead of where he needs to be physically and it's this ability that's the only thing getting him games both at Spurs and Derby.

If he can add a stronger physical element to his game, he'll have a much broader/well rounded style which should ensure he gets much more game time, especially out on loan at the right club. No doubt this is something the club has identified.

In short - lots of potential, a little bit weak at the moment. Let's hope over the summer, we can check his progress and sort him some football for next year.

So Carroll's too small and too lightweight to be a success according to some Derby fans eh.

Reminds me of a couple of players that does. One of ours, and some fella playing in Catalonia.

To be honest what I have been hearing is the same about him last season, he was brilliant on the first part of the loan and then for some reason manager didn't want to play him, rumour has due to derby having to pay wages if he plays more than 60 mins

However we just sent him to the wrong club Derby couldn't score goals and the manager is under a lot of pressure and not loved by the fans and they play 442 and every time he has played, its always in LM or RM and he is not a winger

This tells me Clough didn't want to risk playing him in CM where he was brilliant for the O's, he wasn't playing at the end of last season at the O's but the club felt he did improve so I expect the same again, the club has been a shambles with some of its loaning outs this season(getting the wrong fit)
