I thought he was going to be sold prior to this injury, and I'm trying to figure out if his injury means he's even more likely sold, less likely to be sold or it really doesn't mean a whole heck-of-a-lot.

If I were to guess, I think he'll be an Aston Villa player in the summer.

Logically Villa would make sense, but given the loan for Cleverley is with a move to a permanent (I suspect they've already paid a deposit), then Carroll would be excessive expenditure for them and there'd also be no guarantee he'd play anymore for them than he would for us.

I think the biggest driving factor would be Tim Sherwood. If he loves him as much as the quotes from last season (or maybe the year prior) suggest, he'd love to have Tom Carroll with him.

Everything I found in regards to Cleverley was that his contract was up this summer. United wanted rid so they agreed the deal with Villa but with an option to recall because they might have other suitors should Aston Villa choose to not make it permanent. There might have been a loan fee included of 500k, because when they wanted to buy him permanently in the summer, the cost of the deal was 8m. Then, the reports were he could be purchased for 7.5m in January.

Even so, the move for Cleverley was pushed heavily by Roy Keane and Paul Lambert. I would not be surprised if Sherwood, should he have the option left to him, elects to look elsewhere. The thought of spending 7.5-8m on Cleverley is ludicrous, in my opinion.

Oh I agree, that would be nonsensical.

And fair enough, if the deal is not already agreed, and I think you're certainly right that it was driven by Keane and Lambert.

Really hope we don't make the sale though, as I love the balance that the options for the No 8 of Mason, Carroll, and Alli offer.

I really like Tom Carroll and I really only think he would work in a 3 man midfield at this point. Something like Bentaleb-Stambouli-Carroll sounds like a well-rounded group that could hold possession while offering a nice shield for the back 4. Carroll's the type of player that I could see going elsewhere, to a club that is fully committed to sticking with him through the growing pains, and in the end turn into a really valuable, unique player.

I'm assuming it means a slight tear in his ankle ligament, which while isn't that bad it certainly merits a good amount of rest. He may be out for a good while (six weeks is very optimistic).

This means he's done for the season. So take time to heal properly and perhaps start training ahead of the others ensuring top physical condition when pre-season starts.

Cleverley has supposedly agreed to join Everton at the end of the season. Though he might renege on that agreement if the toffees' slide continues.

I agree he would fare best in central three, but the numbers at Swansea actually suggest he's improved the defensive side of his game substantially. I think he would work in the holding two in a high line in particular, as he wouldn't be needed to get in on the aerial fight as much and we could use his more dynamic nature in the press. So I really hope we keep him to expand the options as far as systems go. We've been crying out for a dynamic playmaker who can work the tight spaces ever since Modric left, even if he can't do it to the same degree Modric did.

Lets get him back to Spurs and into our ice chambers. Be fit again in 4 weeks. Been a bit unlucky the last few months what with Swansea looking to the future and Spurs making it clear his future wasn't going to be at Swansea. Hence the Cork signing.

I don't get why people don't like Tom Carroll. Needs his chance. I think a 3 of Bentelab, Carroll, Mason is juicy.

We're not going to play a 3 though.

Carroll is not athletic or strong enough to play as one of the 2 in Poch's midfield. I think he'll end up moving to Villa to play for Tim.

Can Tim take Ade with him and Kaboul and Lennon?

He's had 10 starts and come on 13 times for our 1st XI

Turns 23 next month. For me he will have to make massive improvements in his game to get anywhere near a regular starting spot for Tottenham

Though he has actually looked quite good in those appearances, which is rather more than Mason had had at the same age… It is the players who have played fifty times and have still have not impressed that I would rather be rid of.

I don't remember him starting 10 times for us but if it was those early EL matches I have only ever remembered him handling himself very well and slotting in nicely and that includes when he came on in the PL. I distinctly remember him putting in some good through balls too and I thought he performed well in preseason. AVB should have given him a chance but he is more than good enough to be a squad player for us and he deserves his chance.

Bringing him back to be around his current mates while theyre are flying is also a good idea. Their confidence will rub off on him and give him the self belief to think he can do it too considering quite a few doubted them. It will also motivate him a lot more.

Let Poch have a first hand look at him in pre-season and decide what to do with him. Right now he's not first eleven material, but would be a good squad player.

Just from reading your comment , in case people are getting things misconstrued. When I (and I assume others) advocate for a young player to play first team football or get a chance, I'm not implying that I think they should or are good enough to be in our first eleven or will improve it, though I think they have the potential too, I am merely stating that they are good enough to be in our squad as a rotation option. They may go on to prove they are good enough for our first eleven like Mason, Bentaleb and Kane have done. I rate Pritchard, Carroll and Veljkovic highly but it would be a ridiculous suggestion to assume that they would automatically be better in the Prem than any of our current players.

We only won 6 of the 14 games he was featured in. Don't think he has done enough to show he is top 4 material. That is the standard for Spurs IMO.
