It's a shame. I love watching the kid play. Great vision and passing ability. I just don't see where he fits into the system Poch wants to play. He needs to play deep and get on the ball but I don't think he has the physicality or athletism to press effectively enough.

how'd he play?

Nothing spectacular. But he was tidy. Was the link to attack, dropping deep to feed Sigs and Dyer into midfield. He is a little lightweight, but he held his own. Didn't make any mistakes and was very comfortable when in possession. Made a few attempts to get into the box. Subbed off with about 20 minutes to play. Stoke started to press themselves on Swansea and he was replaced with a big lad (can't remember his name) - last quarter of the game was a bit of a physical and he wasn't suited to it.

6/10 - Nothing to write home about but he was certainly comfortable in the game.

Slightly built Tottenham youngster Tom Carroll, tiny in Premier League terms at just 5ft 9ins, could have picked an easier place than Stoke to make his Premier League debut for Swansea after joining them on loan for the season.
But the 22-year-old rose well to the challenge, giving the ball away only five times during his 65 minutes. The 5.4 miles he ran was a fraction further than striker Wilfried Bony managed in 90.

Boss Garry Monk likens him to former Swans midfielder Joe Allen, and the way he stood up to 6ft 4ins opponent Steven Nzonzi shows promise for the future.

Didn't look out of place. Replaced by Leon Britton after about 80 minutes I'd say. Swansea fans seemed to be happy with him when he left the pitch. Did what was expected of him, tidy passing, a few ideas in the final third and a few tackles, though would say he looked a little slow when Arsenal attacked, but they are rapid.

Just watched the whole game back. Certainly his best performance so far. Always looking for the ball or moving into space to open gaps. Was unlucky with a few threatening through balls. What really impressed me though was his defensive work, he is never going to out muscle anyone or be that strong in the tackle but he won the ball plenty, shrugged off a hefty challenge from Flamini and kept shape fantastically well, better than any of our midfielders. I guess thats down to the way Gary Monk has the team set up but also playing alongside Ki who (is really accomplished) helped Tom loads.

It wasn't some Modric masterclass but he held his own and you could really see he was learning out there. Hopefully he'll get plenty more game time because the potential is there.

I haven't been watching matches properly but have had the matches on the iPad/laptop whilst working and looking up every now and again

He did well from the bits I saw but he did get done defensively for their goal. He was struggling to keep up with Chamberlain and went in for rash tackle which didn't come off and let Chamberlain free. He still needs to work on his game defensively in relation to his mentality imo, in relation to his positioning and decision making. Sometimes just being a body in the right place, closing the option/pass than outmuscling some or throwing yourself about.

I don't think he needs to learn too much tbh, I think he needs to do what he has done at other levels, in the premier league and if he can grow stronger mentality and impose himself on goals and do the through balls he has the ability to do then he has a future with us imo

Im not so sure he got "done" for the goal. Bony played a wild loose pass, Carroll won a sliding tackle but the ball fell to Chamberlin who was then flying past him before he was off the ground, was never going to catch him so he tried (but failed) to bring him down.

Britton was very good in the 11/12 and 12/13 seasons. He's got a similar build to Carroll as well.

I'm equally surprised at pleased by that. I thought they may put Shelvey straight back in the team but he only makes the bench. Monk keeping the same team that beat Arsenal.

Edit, one change Dyer for Emnes.

I'm still not sure if I see him as a real option in a midfield for us but it's not to say I think he's a poor player. It'll be interesting to see if he can continue to get match minutes and really find some form, but at the very least we probably have a semi-valuable commodity developed from our youth system. He'll have a long, valuable career somewhere, I'm just not entirely convinced it's here anymore.
