Tom's Hardwork brings a Dream to Life

Its every players dream to play in the bigtime, A-League, Bundesliga or even the Barclays Premier League. One player who has taken one step closer to living that dream is Tom Glover.

Tom has just signed a 2 year deal with EPL club Tottenham Hotspurs to be part of their Youth Acadmey and remain in England.

Tom has been with the club from the very beginning of his football, Metro league at U11 and then joining the premier league Sharks at U13. He is an intimidating sight between the sticks standing at around 6'5 and just turning 16 Tom has put the hard yards in as a player and worked extremely hard.

While losing Tommy is a major blow for the club it is one that the Sharks take happpily as its our job to help these dreams come true. The Sharks wish him all the best and have no doubt we will be seeing more of him in the future.

We will have more updates about Tom's success and experiences in the future with some interviews and pictures as he progresses. All of our current players and members join in wishing him Good luck.

Gooner helps Spurs sign Aussie prospect Tom Glover
Posted by Simon Campbell 3 weeks ago

Big things predicted for big Australian prospect

Glover at the 2013 Spartak Cup

Tottenham Hotspur have a former Arsenal player to thank for helping them sign one of Australia’s brightest prospects.

Tom Glover is a 16-year-old goalkeeper and has signed a two-year contract with Spurs. He joins the north London side from New South Wales based Sutherland Sharks.

Glover is literally a big prospect. Already 196 cm tall he has yet to stop growing. His size disguises substantial agility and composure – he is not just physically intimidating but also technically excellent

Spurs have invested considerable time, effort and money in recruiting Glover. For the last two years they have been flying him over to train with their youth teams during school holidays. Not every young player is afforded such expensive treatment.

Spurs have a former enemy to thank for alerting them to Glover’s potential.

Ron Tilsed was an England youth goalkeeper, on the books of Arsenal and Portsmouth, and now coaches the keepers at Sutherland. Several of his charges have made successful professional careers but Glover’s potential was exceptional, he was too big a fish for Sutherland Sharks.

So impressed was Tilsed that he got on the phone to an old friend, Pat Jennings, to tell him that he had found a future star.

Jennings alerted the relevant people at Spurs and they moved quickly to bring Glover to London for a trial. Even if it meant a teenager clocking up some serious air miles they could not risk losing him to another club before they got to take a look.

When Jennings saw Glover play for the first time he knew that he was a real prospect and was sure that Spurs had to sign him.

When a legend like Jennings gets excited about a young keeper then he must have something about him. Spurs liked what they saw and moved to secure Glover’s signature as soon as possible.

Tilsed thinks that he will adjust well to life with a Premier League club.

“For his tender years I’m amazed he’s coped so well in England – it’s a fantastic achievement for Tommy. He has worked so hard with me in the past four years and he deserves the chance,” he said.

“He says the pace of the game in England compared to has really opened his eyes. But because Tommy is so down to earth I’m sure he will grasp his chance.”

Glover played for Spurs at the Under 17 Spartak Cup tournament in April 2013 as a 15 year old and has already trained with various Australia representative sides.

Glover is widely regarded as the best young Australian keeper in recent memory, the brightest prospect to move to England since Mark Bosnich joined Manchester United (for the first time) as a doe eyed 17 year old in 1989.

Mark Schwarzer has taken a keen interest in his development seeking him out at a recent Socceroos training session in Sydney. Should Glover ever feel in need of advice from a fellow Australian custodian in London he will not have far to go.

For now he will play for the Spurs youth sides but his mentor has already set him a challenging goal.

“I have told Tommy I would like to see him the number two goalie for Tottenham by the age of 21,” said Tilsed.

That would be quite an achievement but one that we think Glover is easily capable of achieving. It is our prediction that he will have made his first team debut for Spurs before then. There we said it. Roll on 2019.

The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper gloves will be in safe hands with Tom Glover for years to come.

Tommy earns his spurs
March 8, 2014, 6 a.m.

WHEN he was just 14, exciting Sutherland Sharks goalkeeper, Tommy Glover, so impressed legendary former English keeper, Pat Jennings, that he kept him in England for two months training.

Today, Tommy, just turned 16, has signed a two-year deal with Jennings' English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspurs and the "Spurs" Academy.

The Menai High schoolboy, one of the youngest Australians to play for an EPL club academy, has stood out since starting his career with Sutherland Sharks junior teams in Metro League under 11s, and then Premier League Sharks U13s.

Less than two years ago, Sutherland's goalkeeping coach, Ron Tilsed, the former Arsenal star and former Young England goalkeeper, and John Klapppas, the former Sutherland (now Rockdale) director of coaching, recommended Tommy to Tottenham and he flew over for a trial.

Jennings, the Tottenham goalkeeping director, was excited about Tommy.

"So much so, Jennings quickly moved the Australian youngster up from under 16s with the 'Spurs' Academy," said Tilsed.

With FIFA rules restricting overseas clubs signing youngsters under 16, Jennings negotiated to get Tommy for short stints in England, before offering him a contract when he turned 16.

"For his tender years, I'm amazed he's coped so well in England; it's a fantastic achievement for Tommy," said Tilsed. "He has worked so hard with me in the past four years and he deserves the chance.

"He says the pace of the game in England compared to Australia has really opened his eyes. But because Tommy is so down-to-earth, I'm sure he will grasp his opportunity."

Even the then Australian Socceroos goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer, sought the youngster out for a talk at a Socceroo training session last year in Sydney.

"Mark had heard about Tommy in England, and wished him all the best for the future at Kogarah Oval training," said Tilsed. "Tommy was quite thrilled with their short meeting.

Announcing the signing on their new website, Sutherland Sharks FC stated: "Tommy Glover is an intimidating sight between the sticks, standing at about six foot five inches, and just 16.

"Tom has put the hard yards in and while losing him is a major blow for the club, it is one that the Sharks take happily, as it's our job to help these dreams come true.

"The Sharks wish him all the best and have no doubt we'll be seeing more of him in the future."

Tilsed has thrown out a challenge to the youngster.

"I have told Tommy I would like to see him the No. 2 goalie for Tottenham by the age of 21."

I have a question, If Barca get a transfer ban for signing youngsters when they live far away, how have we signed an Aussie?

I might be being a bit dumb here so can someone do a painting by numbers for me

He probably gets EU citizenship through a parent or grandparent's nationality.

but its 18 not 16

Fifa rules state that international transfers are only permitted for players over the age of 18 - unless the player in question meets one of three qualifying criteria.
Under-18s can move to a club in a different country if their parents move there for non-footballing reasons, if they are from another nation within the European Union or European Economic Area and aged between 16 and 18, or if they live within 100km of the club

now i know it says if the parents move there for non-footballing reasons its allowed but it this deal sounds dodgy to me

im not sure if i could handle a transfer window with no Levy time

I'm sure it's all above board.

Love the Aussie sportsman's mentality. Hopefully this kid will work his way to the top.

Tom was in the U18 squad for this weekend's tournament in Dusseldorf. He played against Wolfsburg (1-0 loss) and I did a very short write up on him:

Tom Glover, a goalkeeper we signed from a team in Australia played this second game and looked established. Very calm on the ball and solid handling too. Had 1 shaky moment in the very first minute - a bit of a mix up with the centre back, but sorted it out in the end (although Wolfsburg appealed for handball outside the box). If for nothing else, he should be signed because his name is superb for a goalkeeper.

The games were only 50 minutes and he really didn't have much to do, but he did impress to the extent he was able to. Was very comfortable playing short and long passes out, even when coming under pressure from attackers. Didn't have any tough saves to make, so impossible to comment on his shot stopping. He could do nothing about the goal.

They tend to make decent keepers in Australia. What happened to that other Aussie keeper we were linked to? Ryan or something. He was supposed to be good.

Doing very well and played all season for Club Brugge. Will probably be our keeper in Brazil to be honest due to the fact he is playing every week.

I would assume a parent was born in the old dart! If so he can have duel passports and problem solved.

3. The conditions of this article shall also apply to any player who has never previously been registered with a club and is not a national of the country in which he wishes to be registered for the first time.
Relax, he probably qualifies under dual nationality anyway
