Top 10 Goals You've SEEN at WHL

Young Danny Rose's goal the other night got me to thinking about some of the amazing goals we have seen at WHL. Apologies if this has been done before but anyway the more i thought about it the harder it was to choose because there have been some great goals at the Lane that i haven't even been able to include. I emphasised the word "seen" but it doesn't matter if you watched it on TV, as long as it was in your lifetime and you saw it live.

We have had some amazing players and some obscure ones. I remember Stephan Dalmat scoring a cracker at WHL (remember him). Freddie Kanoute's excellent goal against Everton (03/04); Keanes mazy goal against Blackburn; Andy Reid's blockbuster v Villa (04/05) and what about Gazza's free kick brace against Shilton in the Derby goal (90/91) or Ziege's free kick against Arsenal (02/03)? I also remember Nico Claesen scoring a fantastic goal in 86/87 but can't recall the opposition now.

Surprisingly all of Berbatov's great goals were scored away from home (West Ham, Charlton, Boro, Besiktas). And when you think that i have not even mentioned great players like Archibald, Crooks, Sheringham, Defoe, Lineker, Waddle or Clive Allen then you can see how spoilt we have been over the years with great attacking players. Funny then that two of my goals come from a full back!

Anyway here's my top 10 - in no particular order;

Rose v Arsenal (09/10)
Ekotto v Liverpool (09/10)
Anderton v Leeds (98/99)
Ginola v Leeds (same game) (98/99)
Hoddle v Man U (79/80)
Hoddle v Nottm Forest (79/80)
Carr v Sunderland (99/00)
Carr v Man Utd (99/00)
Klinsmann v Sheff W (94/95)
Roberts v Anderlecht (for its sheer importance) (83/84)

What's your top 10?

Nayim in his last season got a cracker against Liverpool which I can't find anywhere( somehow they gave goal of the month and season to Dalian Atkinson but it wasn't a patch on Nayim's), same for Paul Stewart v Coventry. I'm sure many others will come to mind. Cyril Knowles v Man U in '73 great free-kick and my first match.

Must be thousands of them. Just a couple off the top of my head from Hoddle, were the one against Watford, away from the lane granted but sheer class(chipped into the far corner, keeper was hardly off his line) and his last goal at WHL? against Oxford. What would he be worth in todays game, fucking bloke was amazing.

Greaves v leicester 68 (i think)

took the ball down on the halfway line and turned in one brilliant fluid movement - then was off dribbling past four foxes defenders before putting it past a young peter shilton, first of his hat trick that day

Greaves v man u 65

this is easy to see on you tube - but came after a lovely passing movement

hod v man u lge cup - audacious volley

lennon v arsenal lge cup - lovely goal and wembley loomed as the singing started in earnest

gilzean v red star belgrade - early 70s - against one of the best teams in europe at the time - we fashioned an incredible team goal involving what seems from memory about 6/7 players - it was simply breathtaking and was crucial in koncking red star out

hod v brum fa cup - some nice football and a beautiful long range finish

hod v forest - brutal volley

zeige v arsenal - astounding free kick

rose - astonishing v arsenal

perryman v semi-final v milan - the better of the two long rangers he hit that night - that led us to the final and winning the first uefa cup

I'd probably have a different order and maybe a different ten if i answered another week

but greaves' two would always be first and second - and he scored a fantastic one from the halfway line v toon too, that could easily be in there

and i've always have a couple of hod's at least - he simply scored special goals almost routinely

Picking only from games I actually attended:

Poyet in off his knee in the last 5 minutes against Citeh -- 4-3 victory a few years back

Keano dribbling in on van der Saar (fulham) and dribbling into the goal -- 2-0 victory

Lennon's injury time winner against the Brummies this season -- 2-1 Spurs victory - First WHL game for my oldest son - we went mental

all game winners - all beautiful at the time

Klinsmann's last ever goal for us against Southampton
Defoe's cracker in the 4-5 loss to the Goons.
Keane's against Blackburn
Linekar against Porto just for the 25 passes that came before his tap in...A world class goal.
Ginola v Leeds (his miss when he hit the post was amazing in that game too plus he hit the bar and obviously Anderton's goal)
Keane against Chavski making it 4-4
Armstrong v Man United just for Ginola's amazing skills and cross
Lennon v Chavski for Keane dumping Chavski on the floor
Hoddle v Oxford
Gascoigne v the Goons with no boot on
Rebrov v Newcastle
Kanoute v Everton
Rose v Goons

Hows that lot for you ? I know it 13 but got on a role

My alltime fav' .....

No single goal, no matter how significant or technically brilliant will ever come close.

T'was 1987, and I was a mere 15 yrs old standing on the Shelf.

Was the day when I witnessed a true legend bid farewell to us mere mortals.

As the sun shone down on the hallowed turf of White Hart Lane, the footballing Gods came together & 30 odd thousand Spurs fans got to witness a fairytale ending. One of our greatest sons ran from inside his own half, beat 3 defenders and with the majesty of a ballet dancer dummied the Oxford keeper deftly passing the ball into an empty net............

Turning to blow kisses to all four stands...... to a man we stood teary eyed, and in the midst of the applause & celebrations I silently bid 'Bon Voyage' to the AS Monaco bound Glen Hoddle:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

I remember us nearly scoring the most exciting, flamboyant, quick passing move I would ever have seen against Wigan/Derby? in 07/08 but Jenas just clipped the ball wide.

If that had gone in, it would have been the best team goal you would be likely to see. Shame.

As for ones that did go in, I know it's fresh in the memory but for the sublime technique, having the sheer balls to have a pop on your prem debut in one of the most important NLDs ever and have the mentality to have actually stuck it away then Rose's beauty on wednesday is hard to beat.

Individual goal wise, Keano's against Blackburn, another massive game, was stunning.

Klinsmanns overhead kick, Kanoute against Everton and Leeds, Ginola against Man Utd, Watford, Leeds, Anderton in the same game against Leeds, Keano's outside of the boot flick against Leeds once more, Steve Carr against Man Utd and Sunderland, Berbatov Vs Reading are a few that immediately spring to mind.

keane v Blackburn
Ziege v arsenal
Jenas v arsenal a couple of years back, towards the end of the season, he exchanged passes with steed then drilled it into the bottom corner from about 20 yards rescuing a point
Im sure there are plenty more but my memory is seemingly incapable of going back more than 12 months atm

I remember that Jenas run, it involved Berbatov I think with a back heel somewhere as well. You're right though it was a brilliant move and also I'm sure Jenas was on a hatrick wasn't he ?
