Telegraph Sport's 2009-10 Premier League season review for Tottenham Hotspur under manager Harry Redknapp.
Manager: Harry Redknapp
Redknapp, as he has consistently reminded us, inherited a team at the foot of the Premier League and with two points from eight games. Since he arrived, Tottenham have reached the Carling Cup final, last year, an FA Cup semi-final this season and qualified for next season’s Champions League.
Best player
Gareth Bale. Having featured in 24 Premier League games for Spurs without a win, Redknapp thought the Welshman was jinxed. But a lot of hard work on the training ground has paid off and now he is the best left-sided player in Britain.
Worst player
Robbie Keane. Since returning to White Hart lane, he had not been anywhere near the levels of his previous spell and so when Celtic came knocking, Redknapp did the sensible thing and let him leave. The break may just rejuvenate the Irishman.
Moment of the season
The Peter Crouch goal late in the game at Manchester City must be the pick. Crouch hasn’t scored as many goals as he would have liked but they do not come as important as the one which took Spurs into the Champions League.
Big issue
Can Spurs prove next season that this term’s performances were not a one-off? The Champions League is a great leveller and will determine whether Spurs are punching over their weight or that, in North London at least, white is the new red.
Verdict: 9 out of 10
A great season for Spurs, and one well overdue. Beating Arsenal is one thing, reaching an FA Cup semi-final another, but to dislodge Liverpool and qualify for the Champions League is a magnificent achievement.
