It’s standard for a fullback, regardless of what foot the other player plays off. Infield is where your support is, the fullback’s job is to push the attacker into traffic.
Generally, wingers look to get to the byeline to cross, that way attackers have the advantage as the defence are facing their own goal and CF’s can attack the ball. If the fullback shows a winger the outside it allows the winger to isolate him. Show him the inside and he usually has more players to try to beat.

It’s not the same anymore, the “safety inside” rule changed when attackers started inverting etc. Now defenders have to use their brains.
