His team selection last night has been described as 'idiotic' by some wannabe pundits it the ratings thread...some of the posters on this site actually believe they know better than people who've been employed professionally in the sport at the very highest level for decades....that will never, ever stop being funny to me.
I'm not from London, I'm from the north. It was evident that the Geordies were far more vociferous than us, but that could be because they were away fans. I have to say that while I love and support my team, I really can't stand some of our fans and their scapegoating. The constant abuse of Sissoko for every fault, however minor, was really grating. You never hear the same moaning about Alli's constant loss of the ball or Kane's airshot. I just think of them as a bunch of cockney wankers. It was noble of Pochettino to praise Sissoko, something that will have been appreciated by him. That was a big "fuck you" to those fans and good on him.

So, given that Dier was picking up at home, Dembélé was injured along with Winks, who would you have put in midfield? Sissoko did a reasonable job, in fact completing the tasks required of him; Wanyama was OK, too. The reason we played badly was nerves, not unexpected. Chelsea got lucky against Southampton, but their luck ran out last night.

See my post on the unsung heroes thread. Sissoko managed to lay on a very good chance for Alli in a game of few chances. In the first half, quite a few of Eriksen's passes missed their targets. Kane lost the ball a lot or couldn't hold onto it; he also played a formless pass at the end that Shelves picked up, and we were stuck in their half in the final minute of added time.
And that would not have been a very balanced defence in midfield for a whole match. Eriksen wasn't dropping back to help out, he was asked to do that as he's been effective in recent games from that position as it means the opposition can't crowd him out.

I have a lot of respect for Poch but I think it's perfectly valid to question a CM pairing of Sissoko and an out of form Wanyama in a must win game. Idiotic isn't a word I'd use but he's certainly made a few questionable decisions including formations and subs. We were very lucky to bag 3 points last night and even luckier that Huddersfield did us a massive favour.

How are we “lucky” that Huddersfield “did us a favor?” They got a result they needed to stay up. Good on them. Even if they hadn’t, we still have another game - at home against a pretty poor side - in which we could have picked up the point needed to get 4th. Even then, depending on other results on the last day we may not have even needed that point.

Tony Gale didnt stop whining from the first second, wtf was that all about, talk about agenda..
.

I have met him mate, as I am in the printing trade and at my previous
job he was one of our clients. Nice guy but a massive Chelsea fan and
also with his West Ham links he hates Spurs.

Anyone else impressed with Lascelles last night?

I thought he looked quite solid and assured. Strange he’s not been given a chance by Southgate.

We were looking at him when he was at Forest apparently.
He definitely looks like he has all the tools.

I remember, way back in the grainy 1970's, talking with a load of Newcastle fans in the Corner Pin before a match at WHL that their supporters always made a big thing of their last away game of the season. Now we know they have a good away support at any time and I would assume this to be the case last night.

I said during the game that he looked like their Ledley, he was pretty immense to be fair.

Eriksen spent half the game dropping deep because Sissoko and Wanyama weren't showing for the ball. Eriksen could have started there instead of Sissoko with Lamela further forward. Alternatively, Foyth is a much more composed player than Sissoko and can actually pass to a team mate.

Eriksen dropping deep is a tactic we use in nearly every game we play...

Been impressed by him most times I’ve watched him. Seems bizarre and foolish for Southgate to continue to ignore him and Shelvey.

Huddersfield did us a massive favour.

No way. Huddersfield did to Chelsea what West Brom did to us and what Huddersfield also did to Man City. It's commonplace, at the end of every season, for a desperate and determined team fighting relegation to secure a point or a win against a superior opponent. Huddersfield just did what they needed to do.

I don't usually indulge in this nonsense about teams "bottling" the end of a season, but if you want to assess clearly what happened on Wednesday, Chelsea "bottled" their chance for top 4 and we didn't.

Your series of posts on this is all allied to to the ongoing habit of attributing every near-miss by an opposition player (e.g., Shelvey's free kick) to a failure of the Spurs defence and every near-miss by a Spurs player (e.g., Kane's one-on-one) to a failure by the Spurs attack. In the real world, sometimes opponents defend brilliantly and the best we can do does not deliver a goal. Sometimes an opponent hits a worldy and it's not the fault of our defence. Shelvey missing his free kick was just as much down to Shelvey's own inaccuracy as it is Eriksen's responsibility when he misses a free kick.

You can't blame our defence for every missed chance by an opponent and blame our attack for every missed chance by us. Similarly, you can't blame the Brighton draw and the West Brom loss on Spurs and then credit Huddersfield for "doing us a favour" when they get a draw with Chelsea. If we fucked up against West Brom, then Chelsea fucked up against Huddersfield. If Huddersfield "did us a favour", then West Brom "did Chelsea a favour".

Fair enough. It was never my intention to suggest that Huddersfield put in a stellar performance to help us out. They did what they did to save their own skins and nothing else. The upshot of that though was that they ended the race for a top 4 place for Chelsea which in turn meant that we didn't have to face a nerve wracking final game of the season when we have been on a run of dreadful performances. In that respect, they gave us a push over the line which was most welcome.

I know Huddersfield had to do whatever it took to get a point but I don’t think i’ve ever seen a second half like that with virtually no football from Huddersfield apart from the goal. It was just boot it 50 yards at every opportunity. The money is killing the league as half of the teams are terrified of relegation and just play survival football. That West Ham game last night was absolute crap .
