TOTTENHAM are out in front in the chase for wantaway Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong.

Several clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester City and local rivals Sunderland, have been linked with the 22-year-old Frenchman, who is desperate to stay in the Premier League.

And Bassong himself has claimed to have held talks with two top-flight teams.

But, while admitting other clubs are tracking his situation, people in Bassong’s camp have told the Chronicle that Spurs are the only would-be buyers to have expressed a firm interest in doing a deal with Newcastle at the price they want.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp sees central defence as the area of his squad now most in need of strengthening, with the fitness of first-choice duo Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate an almost constant concern.

But Newcastle’s manager-in-waiting Alan Shearer has advised United’s top brass to demand up to £15m for Bassong, who cost the Magpies just one-tenth that much when he arrived from Metz last summer.

That valuation may already have put off Arsenal and would be deemed unrealistic by Sunderland boss Steve Bruce, but Spurs’ interest persists.

Even so, Redknapp may yet try to tempt Newcastle into a part-exchange deal involving one or two of his fringe players.

“We’re waiting to hear back from a couple of other clubs regarding Seb, but Tottenham are definitely keen,” said a source close to Bassong.

“It’s still early days, but we do expect things to be resolved quite quickly once teams report back for pre-season.”

The first player who we could realistically get who we've been linked with that I'd be interested in in yonkers. £15 million is over the odds though
  2. Boaman
Like the player not the price, he's worth £5-£7m

Id expect to pay that sort of money for an established player, not one who`s had one season for a team who got relegated. He wont start ahead of King and Woody... and im more than happy with Dawson as back up. Corluka can play there two.... as we have back-up right backs. Why pay this sort of money for squad player?

What do we need him for ,when we have Woodgate,King, Dawson, Corluka, Dervite, and Gunter who can play there, would sooner put the money towards two very good m/f and a target man.

Personally i do think we need another centre half. If woody and king both got injured, we would be left with only Dawson in my opinon that is any good at centre half. A lot of people talk about Corluka being a good centre back, but if any of you saw our last game against Liverpool, he was shocking. He should stick to right back, and if Bassong is available for £5m then i have no problems with getting him. I live in the North East and a lot of my work colleagues etc think that this guy was by far their best player last year. The press are talking up his asking price, and at the end of the day Mike Ashley needs to get what he can at the moment so i think that he will go for around £5m. We can also still have enough cash for additions in other areas

    NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

If hes played for Noocastle then I dont want him
  7. jenko
    ...... Ginola? Gazza?
  8. sebo_sek
Him and Given were probably the only reason they weren't relegated by late March.

The best player from that very weak team. But that means little. Look at Tim Cahill, off the top of my head.
  9. millhouse
Why was Tim Cahill on the top of your head?

Already in the bag from what I am told (my source is a friend who is on the coaching staff up there). The club are waiting until next week when it will be announced.

Must admit he's not that high on my shopping list!

He also said that Joey Barton will be going back to the North West although wouldnt say exactly where (but at least its no where near N17)

waste of money in terms of it could be spent else where ...... decent player but nothing special in a position where we are better off than most for 1st choice and cover

i would like a top player like upson to join us, i really dont have confidence in Ledders/woody../ Dawson ... add to that the slow Corluka as some kind of resort and we dont have much of a reliable defence, Corluka is a good rb but is worse in the middle coz he's slow, i wouldnt like to think we have a mix n match defence to start the season off with, i feel that this area is of the most concern atm.
  13. wolff
he is not proven yet so give him a chance you fickle people - At the end of the day he was playing for newcastle.....
  14. wolff
tim cahill - alla cristiano, the only reason that everton were top half of the table. Surely, if Cristiano didnt score 42 goals......!
  15. wolff
Top comment. Yid through and through..........!
  16. UbeAstard

To be fair, end of season game and it looked like he couldnt be bothered. Not that im excusing him, I just dont think you should judge whether he can play there or not on that game.
  17. StockSpur
how come players like gln johnson can sign for liverpool and we only get to listen to bullshit until next week?
  18. sebo_sek
Well becasue he played in a league below the prem, meaning he would be perceived as not good enough, and we all know how that went. I see the ambigiuty. I didn't mean Everton are rubbish, I meant Millwall were.

Playing for a rubbish team does not mean you are rubbish yourself, hence I would welcome this move but definitely not at that price.
  19. Boony
R U kidding? We conceeded the least home goals in the whole of the premeirship this season. Corluka is worse in the middle cos he`s slow ... in comparison to Dawson??? Woodgate ??

If anything our defence is the last thing we need to be looking at
