For a club who have won a single trophy this century — the League Cup in 2008 — there is a strange kind of smugness about Tottenham at the moment.

Martin Samuel is a fat slug, a bitter Hammer, whose glove puppet in Ashton. He doesn't have an original thought in his head, which is why Eriksen criticising the fondness for buying new players as an English peculiarity would have caused it to explode. They don't like criticism from foreigners in The Daily Stürmer, I mean Mail.

Well in order to 'catch' Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal & Liverpool we would need to drop back quite a bit.

Personally I hope we continue to stretch ahead of them with a tight knit squad who all trust and know each other

Let's look at the reason clubs spending shall we?

Liverpool - trying to stay in top4
Arsenal - lost top 4
Man utd - spent loads but still not in top4
Man city - money coming out of the ground, want to buy the title again. Spent loads and didn't win title
Everton - sugar daddy

Spurs - spent loads in past, wasted it. Now spending better to improve team, not just because we have £70m.

Don't need marquee signings but the squad could do with a smidge of fattening up. The recent influx of money has pushed transfer fees to unprecedented levels though and players who are ready to roll at this level won't come cheap. Maybe we can get by on developing potential. I'll be more than happy if KWP and Onomah can make the transition this season.

I think we'll all agree the squad needs more depth, but results on the pitch last season - the most recent gauge we have - show Spurs are only behind one team. If anything, Spurs must EARN to catch big boys, in order to spend 50m on a defender or 75m on a striker. Otherwise, as Poch has said and as a growing list of players have said, the club has to be smart and trust in the young players. Perhaps Samuel hasn't noticed that giant building going up where WHL once was..

No he can't see it over the great white elephant of a stadium he camps outside.
