White Hart Lane boss close to securing England international signing.

Tottenham have opened talks with Aston Villa over a £20million move for Ashley Young but their bid to sign the winger could be scuppered by his £75,000-a-week wage demands.

It is understood that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been talking to Villa executives for some time about a deal that would include striker Robbie Keane – valued at £11m – as a makeweight.

Young, 25, has made it clear he wants to move to White Hart Lane and Levy has told the player’s representatives that the Londoners are willing to offer a five-year contract that would match his current £65,000-a-week package.

Yet the England international wants a £3.9m-a-year-deal – or £75,000-a-week – that would make him the highest paid player at Spurs, above Luka Modric and Robbie Keane.

Levy is unwilling to break the club’s tight wage structure and the transfer remains some way off completion, particularly given the added uncertainty at Villa Park following Martin O’Neill’s resignation.

Spurs are hoping Young will lower his demands and that the carrot of Champions League football this season – assuming they overcome Young Boys Bern in a two-legged qualifier – will work in their favour. The winger, who signed from Watford for £9.6m in January 2007, has less than two years remaining on his Villa contract and has so far been reluctant to discuss a new deal. (Goal.com)

With Martin O’Neill out of the picture there is a very real fear that Aston Villa will see their star players picked off one by one but at least if this deal was to come to fruition then they would get a proven Premier League marksman as part of the deal. Robbie Keane has been in fine form in pre-season and is a consistent goalscorer at the highest level and could work well alongside Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Ashley Young appears to be pushing for a move away from Villa Park and it looks very much like its a case of dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s and then Harry Redknapp will have started his summer spending.

I really hope this is a load of rubbish.

Me too. Don't want Keane to go and don't want Young neither.

I think 'set to seal' might be a little premature.....

I'm not as against it as many on here appear to be, but I do wonder how (presuming there is some truth in this story) Ashley Young thinks he is worth £75k a week, or entitled to earn more than the rest our team.

Because, whilst I rate him and would welcome his arrival, he isn't.

I think Young is decent and would add to our squad but we have more pressing priorities in terms of a World Class forward who can hold the ball up well and a centre half to replace King. I personally would want someone like Dzeko, Hangeland and perhaps Parker. Bellamy would also be worth a punt. Look to help fund this by getting rid of JJ (£7m), Hutton (£4m), Bentley (£8m) and Keano (£9m) - combined £28m.

Surely this is based on MON era ITK anyway.

This story was written from extracts found on the internet i'm sure, but in any case my thoughts on the subject are 'In Harry I trust' and I think we owe him that at this stage.

I think we need to keep hold of Keane for at least until the deadline as he's our most effective striker pre-season. A few competitive games will tell us whether he's worth keeping hold of and we don't need Young in a hurry!

    What he said.

    Don't let Keane fool in pre-season !
He's just put himself in the shop window for a bumper pay packet.
  15. garyhopkins
Yes, there is little doubt that he would add to our squad but if he thinks he deserves a pay rise and wants to become our highest paid player then he is wrong and I hope he stays at Villa.

He's decent but not worth £20m or £65k/wk , let alone the £75k/wk he's supposedly asking for .

England B team quality when we really need to be recruiting the best .

Think he is a very good player, over the top wage demands but very good player and would bring alot to the team, people complain we have no pace, then when we are after one of the quickest players in the league they say they arent good enough!

I would welcome this transfer even though i dont want keane to leave

England B team? Remind me...how did englands A team perform at the world cup?

Has anyone got a decent arguement as to why he isnt good enough for us?
