Tottenham have launched a bold £5million bid to sign Ipswich starlet Connor Wickham.

Boss Harry Redknapp wants to complete a deal in the summer for the highly-rated young striker, who only turned 17 five weeks ago.

Spurs are prepared to loan Wickham back to the Tractor Boys next season to gain further experience before adding him to the White Hart Lane staff on a permanent basis.

That will keep all parties happy after Ipswich boss Roy Keane admitted recently: 'The fans would lynch me if I sold Connor.'

Tottenham have made a habit of buying top young British talent in recent years, including Gareth Bale, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon, Jermaine Jenas, Kyle Walker, Kyle Naughton and John Bostock.

The muscular Wickham – he is 6ft 3ins tall and weighs over 14 stone – has already been tipped as a future England star. He became the youngest player in Ipswich's history when he made his debut in April last year at just 16 years and 11 days.

Despite making just 10 senior starts in the campaign just ended, he finished as the club's second-highest scorer with six goals, three of them coming in the last six fixtures. Keane was asked last week if he had received any firm interest from the Premiership's big guns – and immediately started laughing.

He said: 'I'm not going to discuss that but you can make out of my reaction what you want.

'If I was a manager of one of the big Premiership clubs I know what type of player I would be looking at.

'Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale went for big, big money and these boys had only played 15 or 20 games for Southampton.

'There are managers out there looking for young, hungry players and I can't deny there's a saying in football that every player has his price.'

I've seen this lad a couple of times as Portman Road is only about half an hour from me. He's certainly looks like a good prospect and I'd be happy as Spurs fan with £5M and loan back to ITFC deal mention in the article. He looks to be REALLY strong and at just 17 who knows what's going to happen to him physically over the next few years. I'm a big fan of buying youg british players though. Loaning them back seems to help all parties too.

got stacks of ipswich supporters at work and they are constantly raving about this bloke.

he has just signed a new contract there but at the same time i assume it will have some sort of high fee release clause, or release to a premiership club clause.

Ive not seen him play but from what they have said, in a few years time he could be the nuts

Sounds like the sort of striker that England have been lacking in recent year and that are sadly lacking from English football.

If we can get hold of another Shearer (or even a fit Ashton) then it would be a great bit of business. Its the sort of risk that Levy likes and has worked out well for us over the last 5 years and with the state of the market, £5M with add ons could be a bargain.

I've not seen the kid play but from the reports i've heard about him and our past history of buying young British talent i'm happy to trust our scouting staffs judgment!

My house mate is an Ipswich fan and when he heard this news he gave me nothing but abuse! He is very very highly rated down at Portman Road and they obviously don't want to see him go.
