Tottenham are closing in on a double January swoop for Stephen Appiah and Glen Johnson.

Ghanaian midfielder Appiah, 27, is a free agent after leaving Fenerbahce in the summer.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp couldn’t afford Appiah’s wages when in charge of Portsmouth earlier this year.

But Redknapp is now set to get his man and also wants to take England full-back Johnson, 24, from his old club Pompey during the transfer window.

    What a load of toss

GJ: with Corluka, and Gunter, i dont think its a priority give our supposed lack of pounds in the kitty, and he wouldnt come cheap. Also Hutton will be available again at end of season, although he might sit out rest of year if only a couple of weeks remaining, but would still mean another glut of right backs.

If Appiah is a free agent, then we dont need to wait til january to 'swoop' for him, as we would have swooped already if he was a highly prized target.

    conclusion: rubbish

As much as I think Johnson has improved since he has been at Portsmouth RB cant be a priority.
Appiah on the other hand could def do a job in our midfield

I would like to see Appiah join the club, with Corluka, Hutton, Gunter, Smith and lets not forget Stalteri at the club i don't see a new right back as an area we would be looking to strenghen.

Unless of course some of the above are on their way out

Realistically, Courluka, Hutton and gunter are considred at right-back if Johnson comes in which doesn't really bother me it could signal a position change for corluka. He can play as a cente half or dm.

Appiah is not a defensive midfielder, there is quite possibly a reason why he is a free agent still (injury prone?) and as someone above said, why not sign him right now? I would love Glenn Johnson as he is better than Hutton for me but there should be a lot more to come from AH and we have ample cover until he is back.

Appiah is not injury PRONE, but he is injured - he has a torn cruciate ligament, and it was his bad luck that his contract ended as it happened so nobody is paying his wages while he recovers. He won't be fit to play this season - if he was, loads of clubs would be sniffing around.

Johnson is an excellent player who I'd welcome - I think he was one of the 2 best right backs in the league last season with Sagna, and the second best this year too after Bosingwa. Top drawer, and a step up from Hutton both defensively and going forward. Not to mention that Hutton is injured for quite a while.

I like Corluka a lot, possibly more than Hutton, but I do think centre back is probably his best position and we may need him to fill in at left back if there's an injury to Assou-Ekotto, because Bale's form is alarming and Gilberto - well, the less said the better.

I agree with your last point 'gloryglory', Corluka could be a solid third centre- back (after Woodgate and King, with Dawson a little way back right now), so another right-back might make sense.I would think that Smith and Stalteri will not figure in the squad much, if at all in the future.

Interestingly Corluka himself feels his best position is defensive midfield rather than in the back four. It could certainly solve a problem if he was allowed to play there.

^ Citeh fans say he was shite when he played there for them last season...
