I'd support Tottenham Hotspur even if they stuck Ronnie Corbett up front and played like Shit United and announced that Campbell was on his way back.

Our play is frustrating. AVB's record thus far deserves our full support.

I think some are far too precious about AVB. We're doing ok but just like everyone else he's far from immune to criticism.

I don't really agree mate. I'm reading plenty of defence of him, but its really quite balanced IMO.

The difference for me is that some are defending him but caveating it with some of the conerns we all share but they're showing an overall appreciation for where we are in real terms. Were others seem to be getting stuck in without caveating or acknowledging some of the good things he's done - and the baffling thing is, there's been plenty of positive things to acknowledge.

Some of the attack I've been reading in this thread is frigging laughable in all honesty - not from yourself just to be clear.

Really do get the feeling that some can't wait to jump on AVB's back. Bizarre considering the points we're picking up and its still early days with so many new faces being integrated.

Pretty shocking really.
People are always like this; they love to see a change.

I can't think of a single manager in the world who would be attainable to us right now that would do as good a job as AVB is doing. Record points total last year, and our best start to a season ever this year.

It's weird isn't it?

The only thing I can come up with to rationalise the extreme criticism that some heap on him is that, despite protestations to the contrary, they just can't accept him because he replaced Harry.

I can't think of one member on this forum who would actually think that.

That's like saying I got a B in my exam but was one mark off an A.

We're 4th at the moment, we're par for the course.

But is 4th par for the course?

As far as I can see we have the 6th biggest budget, so wouldn't that make 6th par for the course?

We upgraded a manager with a new one, 6th is not progress. Too much emphasis on budgets and such like. It's a defeatist mentality. The league is the weakest it's been and if 6th is what we're aiming for we may as well go home in my opinion. That isn't going to keep Lloris/Vertonghen happy when a bigger club comes knocking.

I'm not saying that's all we should be aiming for, we should be aiming for 1st!

However I'm asking what really is par?

You could argue that it is the most competitive its been since the Prem started, eight teams in the mix for 4 CL places is going to make the rest of the season very interesting.

I can't agree with the league being the weakest it's been. Arsenal and Liverpool have improved dramatically while Chelsea and Manchester City invested a lot again in strengthening. Add these to Everton and Southampton who have surprised many with the quality of their play and results and Utd who can't be written off there are probably more teams challenging for that top 4 than usual.

In fact a lot of the 'lesser' teams have improved and for once the majority of teams we face can come under the very over used cliche of 'there are no easy games', teams such as Swansea, Newcastle and Fulham all possess players that are capable of taking points off the top teams.

Newcastle and Fulham? Stop it.
Therein lies the problem.
Stop underestimating EPL teams.
Treat every game the same as the last one and we will probably get in the top 4.
Even this season people have treated lower opposition with disdain and come unstuck.
We have done it ourselves and got a kicking for it.
Arsenal, Man city, Chelsea, Man utd theyve all done and look what happened.
Sorry Bear judging by your posts you should know better.

I'm not saying they are challenging us, but they are stronger than teams such as Bolton, Blackburn, Wigan in 2008 who were mid table teams. Players such as Bent, Berbatov, Remy, Ben Arfa, Sissoko are players that can win games and I was highlighting that the league is actually tougher as a whole now.

the league was at its weakest in 2011/12 IMO, but that's definitely not the case now. aside from the obvious 3, Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton all look like they mean business, and the last two have the added benefit of only playing once a week as they're not in Europe.
