21:48 GOAL - Tottenham 5-1 Sunderland - Gylfi Sigurdsson (90 mins)
Oh dear. The knife has well and truly been turned as Tottenham wrap up the win with a deserved fifth. Sunderland fail to clear a free-kick into the area and Gylfi Sigurdsson takes full advantage to swat the ball in from close range. Even more damaging than the defeat itself is the Sunderland players' lack of fight. They have given up far too easily.
21:43 GOAL - Tottenham 4-1 Sunderland - Emmanuel Adebayor (86 mins)
One of the easier goals Emmanuel Adebayor will have scored this season as Sunderland fall apart. Harry Kane capitalises on a poor Wes Brown header to race past Santiago Vergini, who subsequently gives up the chase far too easily and Kane passes to the unmarked Adebayor to tap in from close range.
21:40 SUBSTITUTION - Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland
With the points seemingly in the bag, Tim Sherwood makes a couple of changes as the game enters the last 10 minutes. First, Nacer Chadli goes off with Gylfi Sigurdsson given a run-out and then Andros Townsend comes on for Aaron Lennon.
21:41 Substitution, Tottenham Hotspur. Gylfi Sigurdsson replaces Nacer Chadli.
21:34 GOAL - Tottenham 3-1 Sunderland - Christian Eriksen (78 mins)
Just as Gus Poyet's changes looked to have got Sunderland back into the game, the excellent Christian Eriksen puts the contest beyond them. This time he receives the ball outside the area from Nacer Chadli, looks up and then shoots low, with his effort taking a slight deflection off Phil Bardsley on its way into the net.
21:32 SUBSTITUTION - Tottenham 2-1 Sunderland
Gus Poyet does indeed decide to make changes as Craig Gardner and Ignacio Scocco come on with Carlos Cuellar and goalscorer Lee Cattermole making way.
21:20 A break in play at the moment as Wes Brown is being treated after taking a heavy knock when he clashed with Harry Kane, who is sporting a nasty looking cut on his forehead as a result of the collision.
21:15 GOAL - Tottenham 2-1 Sunderland - Harry Kane
Harry Kane marks his full league debut with a goal and, unsurprisingly, it is Christian Eriksen who creates it. He curls a low ball into the area where Kane sticks out a boot to poke the ball beyond Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone.
HALF-TIME - Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland
20:42 Lee Cattermole (Sunderland) is shown the yellow card for a bad foul.
20:27 GOAL - Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland - Emmanuel Adebayor (28 mins)
It is a goal for Emmanuel Adebayor but I'm not sure how much he actually knew about it. Christian Eriksen drills the ball across the face of goal, Wes Brown sticks out a boot but fails to get a touch and instead the ball smacks Adebayor somewhere around the chest area to deflect into the goal. Game on!
20:20 Marcos Alonso (Sunderland) is shown the yellow card.
20:17 GOAL - Tottenham 0-1 Sunderland - Lee Cattermole (17 mins)
Disastrous defending from Tottenham sees them fall behind as Lee Cattermole's neat finish gives Sunderland the lead. After picking up a pass from Hugo Lloris, Vlad Chiriches plays a horrendous square ball to no-one and Cattermole can't believe his luck as he intercepts the pass with no-one around him and finishes from outside the area with Lloris stranded. That's Cattermole's first-ever Sunderland goal.

Tottenham Vs Sunderland
Premier League

Venue: White Hart Lane Date: Monday 7th April Kick Off: 20:00

Tottenham take on Sunderland at White Hart Lane on Monday Night Football with both teams in need of victory for very different reasons.

The Black Cats slipped to the bottom of the Premier League table at the weekend and are seven points from safety, although they do have three games in hand on many of the teams around them.

But Gus Poyet's side have taken just one point from their last six top-flight outings, with their last victory coming against Newcastle at St James' Park way back on February 1.

Time is rapidly running out for the Wearside club, who also have Everton, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United to face in the closing weeks of the campaign, if they are to avoid sliding out of the top-flight.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have lost four of their last six matches to increase the pressure on rookie boss Tim Sherwood and leave their top-four hopes hanging by a thread.

Arsenal's current troubles mean that Spurs could move to within five points of the fourth-placed Gunners with victory tonight, but a Europa League berth is a more realistic target.

Manchester City's Capital One Cup success and impending top-four finish means sixth place will be enough for a berth in the continent's second-tier tournament, a slot currently occupied by Manchester United, with Tottenham one point behind.

Tottenham

Emmanuel Adebayor is back in contention to face Sunderland, although Roberto Soldado and Jan Vertonghen are out.

The Togolese striker has missed the last three matches with a gashed heel and hamstring problem, while Vlad Chiriches and Paulinho are also back in contention.

Soldado and Vertonghen are unavailable after sustaining injuries in last weekend's defeat at Liverpool, while Kyle Walker, Erik Lamela and Etienne Capoue remain absent.

Sunderland
Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet has no fresh injury concerns for the trip to White Hart Lane.

The Uruguayan's biggest problem will be to find the best XI to attempt to return from north London with something to show for their efforts, after admitting he may have made a mistake in starting Monday's 2-1 home defeat by West Ham with leading scorer Adam Johnson sitting on the bench.

Striker Steven Fletcher is yet to be ruled out for the season with an ankle injury, but he remains some way from fitness, while keeper Keiren Westwood (shoulder) is still missing.

Emmanuel Adebayor should return from a three-match absence with a gashed heel for Monday's visit of Sunderland.

Vlad Chiriches and Paulinho are also back in contention but Roberto Soldado and Jan Vertonghen miss out with injuries sustained last weekend.

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the return to his former club.

Adam Johnson could earn a recall, but Steven Fletcher and Keiren Westwood remain sidelined by injury.

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League matches against Sunderland and are seeking a fourth successive victory in this fixture.
  • Sunderland's only win in their last 19 top-flight visits to White Hart Lane was by 2-1 in August 2008.

Tottenham Hotspur

  • Spurs have lost and failed to score in three of their last four league matches. Their overall tally of 10 defeats this season is already more than in each of their previous three campaigns,
  • Nonetheless, they only have three points fewer than their best Premier League tally after 32 games (59 points in 2011-12).
  • Tottenham could become only the fourth team to finish a Premier League season in the top six with a negative goal difference.
  • Spurs and Manchester United are the only teams yet to lose a Premier League game from a winning position in the current campaign.
  • Danny Rose made 29 appearances and scored one goal on loan at Sunderland in the 2012-13 season.

Sunderland

  • Sunderland have only earned one point from their last six matches and scored just three goals in that period.
  • Guy Poyet's side have gained two points from losing positions this season, the joint worst record in the division with Crystal Palace prior to the latest round of fixtures.
  • The Black Cats have scored a league-high 46.4% of their goals from set pieces this season.
  • They have received seven red cards this season, the most in the division.
  • Head coach Gus Poyet had two spells at Tottenham, one as a player (82 league appearances and 18 goals) and also as assistant coach to Juande Ramos.
  • Adam Johnson is expected to make his 250th career league appearance.

It's sad that I'm more excited that the above info states Lamela and Capoue are back in a week, than I am by the actual match.

Well mate, the date says so. Whether the plank selecting the team says so, is a whole different thing altogether.

A:- A nice trip to Birmingham to play WBA ?

B:- Wait a week and give him time in the home match against Fulham ?

C:- Probably just ignore him because Kyle Walker will be fit and selected to play in Lamela's position ?

Finding it very very difficult to give a toss at this point tbh. Haven't felt this ambivalent since the mid 2000 s, if ever

I feel like there is no pressure coming into these last fixtures of the season. Just going to sit back and enjoy the games just treat them like one offs and not be constantly worrying about what other teams are doing etc.

Actually quite looking forward to it for the first time in ages.

I would say B is a sensible option for coming back from a long injury

Then we are talking about TS, so the answer is C.

Well. Utd are looking far improved with Mata firing now. I think they'll overtake us. Everton have a harder finish than us technically, but it's hard to tell at seasons end sometimes. We've got to hope Everton drop a lot if points & we don't. United aren't going to I dont think. 6th is looking mighty shakey to me

Everton is also a good team with a good manager. We have a few good players and an absolutely horrible manager. We wont overtake Everton and United will overtake us. We will finish 7th.

Well it will make a nice change from not being a bag of nerves, that's for sure.

Wouldn't surprise me if we battered them now, too little too late but it would be so Spursy.

I'd don't want us to lose any game, and I want us to win this - but if we miss out on Europa League you won't catch me crying about it.
