Should the Summer Transfer Window close before the Premier League season starts?

Makes sense, but just like the current deadline day, I don't think they'll manage to keep it completely separate from other leagues/countries.
Suspect UEFA/FIFA will want to get involved in it.

Was more about the clubs than the players on that one but I guess your point still stands to some extent.

Yes they're extremely privileged and all that, no-one is denying that. Just will find it interesting to know how the players may feel. EG: Someone makes it to the final of the world cup, so has been playing football weekly from August - Start of July. Now in 3 weeks, when they finally have a break off football, they need to decide where they're going to be playing for the next few years, so also where they're going to live, what country they're going to live in etc...
Cry me a river ;)

Sounds entirely sensible, the only negative I can think of would be for a specific KWP-type situation at the start of a season... You've got a promising youngster who you're not sure is ready, injury/transfers opens up a chance for him, and the manager has got a few games to assess it, try him, and if needs be still has time to buy. If the window shut before the start of the season then I bet 99.9% of managers would definitely buy someone and block the path of the prospect (and it's hard enough already for them to get a chance).

Makes no sense if teams can still sell during a window as then clubs become sitting targets for the huge monied clubs. If the whole window was shut on the day before the first fixture then great it makes a lot of sense

Complaints about other leagues having a later deadline are a red herring imo. No PL club will be forced to sell, particularly when they can't get replacements in. It will simply force teams into earlier decisions, rather than letting things drag on. The stuff this season with Barkely, Sigurdsson, Van Dijk, etc. should all be resolved before the season.

Deadlines have a way of making things move quicker. Everyone will adjust, and teams will be more settled in August.

Nope. Every PL club is financially secure enough that they do not need to sell - even to Barça or Real Madrid. Those clubs will understand that teams can't replace players after the deadline, so they will move earlier for PL players.

And players won't kick up a fuss/go on strike in these cases? PL Teams are financially secure now but we still see players going on strike and all that.

We'd need to cut out player power too surely?

Players, and more importantly, their agents, will understand. It will simply move the timetable up - and players agitating for a move will know to do so prior to the deadline.

I want to believe you're right... but that's putting a lot of faith in players and agents.

The timings of other leagues is the only issue against this.

We know players get their heads turned and once they want to leave many seem incapable of focusing and just getting on with the game.

Most foreign clubs will bid early for Prem players but the likes of Barca, Real and PSG are arrogant enough and rich enough to think they can get players whenever they want.

This weekend it was great to be watching football again and discussing the actual performance of teams.

Rather than hearing how we have bought no one people were reminded of what a good we have. Liverpool have spent big but on the pitch they still have a way to go.

Now the season has started I just want to focus on the game itself, not constantly talking about transfers.

I think Barça are finding things a little different now. And big clubs like RM and PSG tend to get business done early, and don't wait for the last minute to shop.

Sure but they had no choice but to lose Neymar. In response they now believe they can get Coutinho. I believe they are arrogant enough to think they could turn his head and get him regardless of whether his club can buy a replacement.

They obviously won't. It's still a good idea though. If foreign clubs want the PL money they will just have to deal earlier. I don't think much will change for them.

I'm totally in favour.
And then you'll get a scenario like this summer. A European club sells a star player and have tons of money comes in for a player in August, he goes on strike and refuses to play so you have to sell, only now you can't replace him for five months. It would give the European clubs a big advantage in any dealings with PL clubs.

How about conditional closure, the weekend/Monday prior to season starts?

However, give teams the chance to sell/buy one player, in case of injury (assuming Europe won't agree to also close earlier).

I agree the transfer window should shut before the season starts. However there are a couple issues that we may face., the first being everywhere else in europe will still have the end of august deadline, so if one of our players has a buy-out clause in their contract, the window shuts and a team from europe can activate that clause, the players leaves and we're unable to replace them.

It would have to be either the clause is no longer active after the english window shuts or the selling of players applies within the window too.

I thought about this, as after all players can get injured any time. What is different I guess about the start of the season is that players have been away, many have been on international duty and often seem to pick up injuries very early in the season ... so maybe you have something here

Voted for it but do have a concern about being out of line with the other European leagues.

I suspect all the major leagues are just waiting for one country to do it. We are probably the biggest market in Europe so makes sense for it to be us. I expect others will follow suit should it go through.

I dont see why it wouldnt work. We'd just make it so there can be no incoming or outgoing transfers. I bet the other leagues would follow suit if they thought they'd lose money.

Sure, but would be nice if we could agree with other leagues to put this in place.
