The first five stories in Saturday's BBC Transfer Gossip are:-

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has persuaded chairman Daniel Levy to part with £15m for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing. (Daily Mail)

However, the north London club are also monitoring Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pedersen, Bordeaux's Denilson and Seville's Diego Capel should England international Downing turn down a move to White Hart Lane. (The Times)

Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt is also on Tottenham's shopping list for about £5m. (Daily Mirror)

But Redknapp's quest for Craig Bellamy could be over if cash-rich Manchester City enter the race for the West Ham striker's signature. (Daily Mail)

Spurs are also eyeing Manchester United number two goalkeeper Ben Foster, who could be persuaded to move from Old Trafford if Redknapp offers £20,000 a week in wages. (The Sun)

1Is it just me who now loathes the transfer windows and every Tom, Dick and Carlos being linked with Spurs?

Most of the above rumours are just regurgitated.

I think the last time I got really excited was when Davids was linked to us but since then I've gradually become totally disenchanted with transfer rumours.

Every time I see the name Downing, my heart sinks. And then there's all the foreign players who are interested in joining us purely for the chance to play for the famous Tottenham (when they lose their place in the team or are about to renegotiate their contracts).

I still stay up past midnight on the last day of each window but it's mainly to post news of the last minute transfers to/from Spurs (nowadays we nearly always leave it to the last minute - brinkmanship taken to extremes) on the front page and it's a relief for me to know that the window has closed until the next time.

And here's today's major scoop

Cynical, moi?

Damn right!

ah yes I remember when we were after Davids. I must have posted more on this site in those few long days than ever before, and when he finally came it was amazing.

since then it has been dissappointing. Not in terms of who we have signed, but in terms of the way the transfer window has become. Since Arnesen brought in this approach of us going for multiple players all at once to cover out backs at all times, there are many little superficial fires all over the plays which produce so much smoke collectively that the club end up being linked to any and everyone.

The David's transfer was a real saga I seem to remember, dragged on for about a month after it was first announced. Still its better than the Downing saga which has dragged on for about 3yrs.
What were the disadvantages of the all year round transfers,I forget now. What was the transfer window system meant to avoid. We have had these rumours for over a month now and its worse in the summer.
At least we havn't had all that ITK stuff. If we have to have a window then let it be at the end of the season. It will force clubs, including ourselves to closely examine what we have on the books , including our youngsters.

Looks like the times likes to bring up really old transfer rumours of 3 years ago. Denilson has since moved on from Bordeaux to Al-Nasr, FC Dallas and is now a free agent after been released from Palmeiras.

So when the Davids deal was going through you "posted more than ever before", eh BBLG? I'm not sure how you could have done that because you just about fill the fricking site up now with your postings!

The "scoop" by Comolli takes the effing biscuit. It is a crock of sh1t.

SK is more believable.

Cue : European/South American/African onslaught in the press stating

"I supported Spurs/Tottingham as a kid, they inspired me to become a footballer and a way out of the barrio/slum/shantytown where my Ma & Pa had 18 jobs between them saving for my boots and a ride out of poverty in the back of a limo owned by a cigar toting rip off agent"

One day the club will become skint and you will miss these rumours. One thing for sure, we can't continue to spend so much and continue to fail on the pitch. Teams, fans, media etc all around the world probably laugh at us, with all the money we've spent since the premier league started, not once have we competed in the champions league.

If we sign Downing we will have spent £30M on 2 of the slowest wingers in the Premier League.....

Downing isn't the quickest but I think he is faster than people give him credit for, and definitely faster than Bentley. He does often beat his man, he just does it very diretly and without much flamboyance.
