If the clubs came together to decide they wanted to shut the transfer window for incomings early*, then they can also collectively hold resolve in not allowing any premier league player to depart after it shuts (forcing the rest of europe’s hand) - though it only takes one selfish club to fuck it up.

*cant remember if it was unanimous or not though

I think it's a good thing that the window closes in line with the season starting. For a long time the general distraction of transfers being done whilst players are meant to be focused on football has been detrimental.

Yes it's been a tough window for us with players at the WC etc. etc. but overall i think this is a positive change and whilst international tournaments will get in the way every other year, the pros outweigh the cons for me.

14 clubs voted in favour:

"Fourteen Premier League clubs voted in favour of the amendment, the minimum needed for the plans to be approved. Manchester United, Manchester City, Watford, Swansea and Crystal Palace voted against, while Burnley abstained."

I like the idea of the window closing before the season starts as otherwise it leaves teams unsettled until the end of August, but in reference to that the rest of Europe needs to comply with it otherwise our players can potentially be sold once the season starts defeating the object.

I'd be all for it if we could end the selling period at the same time.

As it is, it puts us at a serious disadvantage as we can't buy before we sell, and we can't sell because most of the buying clubs have a lot longer to make their move.

I think the World Cup has added to that problem certainly, but it does feel at the moment as if this half and half position is a major contribution to the fact that we're going to a season as badly prepared as I can remember (in line with our ambitions anyway).

Of course, putting any neutrality aside - i think we're in a very mixed position this year, so i agree with your point. Selling after the window shuts puts us and other teams at a disadvantage, especially if you want money for a player you haven't even named in your squad.

The selling aspect is something which we'll (EPL as a whole) will have to get used to i suppose, providing it's here to stay - i agree it does put us at a disadvantage overall vs. Europe because of the squad HG quota and the need to competitively move on dead wood before buying. I guess one tactic longer term may be to follow in Liverpool's shoes but this could create financial havoc with most teams - overpaying for players early with no guarantees as to how those players will settle/fit. I can't see Levy playing this game unless it's a player who ticks all the boxes - immediate impact on first 11, young, value for money, sell on value etc. even then he'd try a lowball offer just to test the waters i'd imagine.

It's a good thing that it closes before the season starts, it just puts us at a slight disadvantage as the other European leagues aren't doing the same. It should be brought in for the whole of Europe.

Look, it doesn't matter how long or short the transfer window is, Spurs will always do their business on the last day. To most people this is madness. Even if we manage to bring a player or two in a bit cheaper, it also means the one's we sell go for less. New players also need the pre-season to get used to the club. For the life of me I can't see any logic behind this stupid waiting game. I absolutely hate Liverpool, but have to take my hat off to how they have gone about their business, As a result this I am certain they will finish in the top two. It's the lack of ambition that does my head in !!

It needs to be aligned with the rest of Europe, if that means moving the Premier League opening game back then so be it

I'm here for the idea of the window closing before the season starts.

Similarly I think it was poor for us to decide this without the other European leagues doing similar.

What I think was absolutely dumb was starting it in a World Cup year. I mean we have literally only got the last of our players back today.

Coulda just saved this change to next year when we don't have a world cup going on.

It was supposed to be so that clubs could kick the season off knowing they weren't going to lose their best players after 3 games.

I believe the rest of Europe will fall in line next year and no one will want it back the way it was..
Personally, I look forward to knowing who our signings will (or won't) be before we kick off next week.

The idea of knowing your squad when the season kicks is sound, but it only really works if all the leagues in your vicinity are closing at the same time. Ours closing early leaves us prey to clubs from Europe, although where Toby's concerned it might not be a bad thing should the likes of PSG or BMunich fancy a punt.

For it to work properly we need:

1. Other leagues in Europe to adopt the same philosophy.

2. For the PL to push back the beginning of the season to fall in line with the other top UEFA leagues.

It needs to be a level playing field or the PL will be taken advantage of.

Remember that rather than the PL pushing back it's more likely other leagues will be moving their dates forward: if FIFA are serious about a Winter World Cup in the desert then the major leagues will benefit from moving start dates slightly earlier to help ensure there's space for a ~6 week break in the middle.

Doh, Levy don't sign players before August 31st 11:59pm (roughly) just a minor flaw
