Right I've just been working this out, bit tricky but we can still qualify even if we lose in Belgium. I'm not suggesting we will just working it out. Aalborg could finish above us but it would mean that Getafe would finish with 6 points at best. It will then come down to GD and sadly our woeful finishing tonight could come back to haunt us. However a 1 goal defeat in Belgium by us would still mean that Getafe would need to beat Anderlecht by 3 goals, more if they aalborg beat them comfortably.

A draw is enough to guarantee us second place

A win wouldn't guarantee first since Getafe could pip us on GD

As I pointed out before the game - this win wouldn't put us through - some people on here were very gung ho about our qualifying - we were going to win this game easy - top 3 no trouble

Well Hapoel did us proud tonight - so now I am confident - however as I said pre-game we need 7 to be sure -(it was simple maths - but some dodn't seem to want to do it) - chances are 6 will do it for us now - but all credit to Hapoel for helping us.

Incidentally I said that beating them was a good performance

One person told me I wouldn' know a good performance etc

AS I replied at the time I've been watching Spurs for nearly 50 years I'm quite happy in judging what's a good performance thank you

A few called Hapoel a 'pub side' - so they've just beaten a team that recently beat another 'pub side' Barcelona - yeah right - good judgement call -

when some people learn to enjoy good performances and very good results like we got in Tel Aviv - then they'll enjoy following spurs more :)

Good call, you were vindicated. There is too much sniping between Spurs fans here!

I'm with you on that one, but in a more simplistic way. A win is a win is a win.

Well said DC, your usually not far off the mark, I like you get miffed at some of our support not giving the oppo the due and proper respect they deserve.

Is it done on goal difference Camaj or face to face results like the CL, ie Getafe beat us so they will qualify?

thanks for all the backing guys :)

It is on GD I think too - and then I think goals scored - so we're in a good position at mo if we tie on points - what I fear is a 'dead rubber' for one side where a team already out gets hammered - hopefully all the teams will still be in with a chance by the last ties - and then we get draws/odd goal wins.

Agree on your second point. Without wanting to upset the Mods here they should follow the COYS forum who do not allow any abuse between members.

Seeing as how we are undefeated under Ramos and also that in the last 3 years only one team hasn't made it through to the next round of the UEFA cup with 6 points, i think we have a lot to be happy about.

but not to abandon a sense of humour though COYS get so precious about it that banter get misconstrued.. and before you know it. wham. life ban.

The hapoel win does now look better than most first thought. I would also like to add thay our opponents last night beat Sampdoria over 2 legs. How well we do at Anderlect will also put into context thier draw agasint them too.

I thought that although we were poor in the first half they were good.

As I said on matchday chatroom last night, I'll have to apologise to DC_Boy, so, sorry mate, you were right. It was a much tougher game than I and most were expecting, am not so sure about a win in Belgium if we start the game as badly as we did last night. Right result in the end though, must've been a great game to watch for the neutral.

So we're basically through I reckon, touch wood, etc. Think we can get top spot too.

And that'll be to the round of 32, the heady heights of Round 3. They do make you work hard for it in the UEFA cup. At this stage of the season in the CL you're already quids in to the tune of about $87M and then, even if you're fairly rubbish (finishing 3rd), you get another crack in the UEFA cup - that really pi$$es me off about UEFA.

Anyway, a cursory glance at the current CL tables doesn't worry me too much with the teams in 3rd place at this stage. Tougher than last night but hopefully well within our capabilities when we're firing on all cylinders in February. Would be great to knock Liverpool out but I know they'll squeeze into the KO stage much as I hate to admit it.

:) Haxman - no need to apologise - it sure was a good game - here's hoping we can get that point or better in Belgium.

I'm pretty sure it's GD, because teams only play one another once.

They could still do the head to head result in that game. However, you're right, according to the dutch megastat site it goes

points,GD,Highest goals for, Highest goals away, points from away games and co-efficient. So a good win in Belgium would really help on that front and a 4-5 result would be better than a 0-1

we all know we need a draw in belgium to be certain. and that is at least what i expect, if we cant do that we shouldnt be in this competition, its that simple.
