Why are they defending the decision for the penalty? It clearly was an error

Think the ref’s angle was a pen. The error was VAR who could see no contact but didn’t refer.

The cynic in me says they wanted to avoid overruling the female ref which is awful because a) she needed them in that instance and b) she’s had a terrific game.

Technically she did make the error because it wasn’t a penalty but that’s the whole point of VAR. They should see there’s no contact and tell her to come have another look

Interesting enough game to watch.

Liverpool clearly not firing on all cylinders yet, and defensively looking quite open at the start of the season. That attacking threat is always there though.....

Chelsea, like the weekend, played a lot of slick football tbf. But even though they didn't get exposed as badly as the weekend, still enough signs of how naïve they are defensively and that teams will get joy against them. I know they are missing Rudiger but the two current centrebacks are both young and neither are marshalling the backline or have much nous yet. They also have an attack minded left back, Jorginho isn't the best defensive screen, and the goalkeeper isn't much of a commanding presence either. You'd always fancy you can get at them.

Adrian doesn't have a foot on the line when that was taken?

Didn't want either team to win, so no matter what happened a bunch of twats were going to win.

I don't get it either VAR was brought in to check this but not used in penalty shoot outs.
Or in games now I think. After the farce that was the women's world cup. Ultimately, if you hit a penalty well enough you should score. Most of the time penalties are given in situations where a goal isn't the most likely outcome. To go over the top on the laws surrounding these things is too punitive, and gets rid of a bit of fun.

I think its more important to follow the spirit of the law when it comes to football not to be super dogmatic around it. Football is always a game where interpretation is necessary, and it isn't always black or white.

The laws are intended to make the game more enjoyable and fair. Keepers standing on their line for pens is aimed to stop keepers just coming way far out and removing any advantage of a penalty. The new law is a relaxation of the previous law as it became incredibly rare for keepers to stay on their line before the kick. Ironically this liberalisation has meant everyone is now focused on something that was never really an issue to begin with.

This is my issue with VAR, cos everything is becoming right vs wrong and more like rules rather than laws. The Stirling offside was a bit of a joke last week, because no one would have ever complained about it were it given, same with the Rose handball.

These are things that maybe are 'correct' decisions but are fundamentally irrelevant to the intention of the laws from which they stem from.

The way that TV driven crappy controversy led to the push for VAR, which has then led to more controversy and more emphasis on looking at 'key decisions' is driving me insane. I just want to focus on the game, so what if some decisions are wrong, its rarely why a team loses or wins. More focus should be on the players on the tactics and all this. Real analysis not cheap television.

No pundit was going to come out and criticise the first female referee in a top level men’s game, they’d of been hung out to dry as male chauvinist pig. Hence them all defending the penalty decision

I thought Adrian was way out on Abraham’s pen. Am I missing something regarding penalties and the keeper stepping out as the shot goes?

I hate Chelsea but I think I despise Liverpool more now after the CL final. It just depresses me hearing anything about them let alone them winning a game never mind a trophy.
