Can't make my mind up on this. On the one hand I think it's stupid because hardly anyone gives a fuck about the EL so having another competition that's below that doesn't really make sense to me. But then on the other hand I reckon if I was a fan of a mid-table nothingy club who hardly had anything to play for every season, I reckon I'd be well up for some European away days and the like.

Then again, as we've seen before when mid-table teams scrape into the EL they often don't have the squad depth to cope with it and so end up in trouble elsewhere in the next season.

All in all, it's a bit of a weird one to be honest.

It's a weird one for fans of PL clubs, but for fans from leagues that aren't among the best in the world it's a much better chance of regular European football than they've had in recent years.

It's not about getting smaller clubs from big leagues into the competitions it's about bigger clubs from smaller leagues getting to group stages rather than being knocked out in qualifying games.

At least that's how it reads to me.

I’m completely against this as I’m really struggling to keep up with all the acronyms as it is.

Will stop teams who’ve had a bad season trying not to get in the europa league. If they do that then now you’ll have to play in an even shitter competition.

As i said as far as i'm aware this will not give any extra spaces for english teams.

We'll have to wait for the full details but it seems to be they want more teams from smaller countries getting into actual competitions rather than being knocked out in qualifying stages.

The europa league will actually shrink to 32 teams. Making it more manageable and the same format as the cl. So there will be less games to win it making english teams more willing to play in it.

Not just more manageable but much more competitive too. Fewer teams, and nobody from smaller countries except champions knocked out from the CL able to qualify, so no more Tromsos or Limmasols. Plus a big incentive to win the group rather than come second because it lets you skip a round (2nd place teams have to play 3rd place from CL groups to go through).

Who do 1st placed teams play then? If it's 8 groups of 4 they wont play 3rd placed.

The 8 Group winners go straight to the Round of 16

The 8 Group runners up and 8 CL dropouts play an extra playoff round, which replaces the current round of 32, where the winners join the group winners in the Round of 16.
