Surely the current shit storm with Eriksen and Toby should have us shoving a juicy contract under Jan's nose. Find it hard to believe that this hasn't been given some very high priority.

Where is it suggested that we are "messing him around" or that it hasn't been given "very high priority"? As usual, the journalistic spin does not reflect the words spoken by the footballer.

Quotation (buried at the end of the article): "I feel very, very good physically so I am not sure what is going to happen this year, I can only say I am happy where I am at and I feel the support from the manager, team-mates and the squad."

Spin (first line of article): "Vertonghen is keen to extend his stay at the club but is unsure whether he will be offered a new contract."

Come on, people, use a bit of critical thinking before your knees jerk. With 80-90% of footballers being interviewed, lines like "I am not sure what is going to happen this year" are code for "I want to discuss the football, not contracts, so change the subject".

Vertonghen is 32. If he is fit and still performing at his customary level next spring, expect him to be offered another 1-3 years, probably depending on how they rate his leadership and mentoring abilities.

Out of all the players who are on a free next season he is the one that wants to stay and we haven't even tried to negotiate a contract extension. Does poch want him to stay?

As I wrote just above, he'll be 33 when his contract expires. That's an age when even the best players get offered a shorter contract consistent with their age and probably don't get offered anything until it's clear that they can still perform at a high enough level to justify their wages.

Should be offered a two year deal now. Unbelievable player and professional. We should be nailing him down right now. I don't think he is going to look for excessive wages and he is without a doubt our best defender.

I understand your point David but I remember the boss saying he thought Jan could play until he was 40 just this past spring. I also think there is value in creating a bit of a sense of continuity with a couple more extensions, at a time when many are being linked with moves away.

As far as I'm aware he's on relatively low wages (60k?). To replace him with anything close to his quality would cost us double that at an absolute minimum. We need to ensure some continuity in the squad for the next couple of years so I'd be all for offering a bumper 2 year deal with an option to extend. He's been absolutely fantastic for us and IMO he deserves the best we can give him.

I thought the most important part of Jan's quotes were just how happy he is at the club and how much appreciation he feels from the fans, manager and teammates.

Based on that i'd say it's highly probable that when a new contract is offered , as long as it's respectful, then he'd sign it. So absolutely no rush or panic needed.
