Redknapp sanctions talks with Inter to land former Arsenal star

    Le Sauce: Daily Mail

Tottenham have opened talks on the controversial signing of former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.

Manager Harry Redknapp has sanctioned talks with the 33-year-old French star and hopes a free transfer can be completed.

A one-year contract is on the table and Spurs are challenging Vieira to take a massive drop in salary to prove his commitment.

A pay-as-you-play deal is on offer and, according to sources in Italy, Vieira is so keen for the chance to work with Redknapp that he is willing to accept wages of around £35,000 a week, a massive reduction on his Inter Milan deal where he is among their highest paid players.

'This is not about money, this is about a chance to play,' said a friend of Vieira's last night.

'He has great memories of his time in London at Arsenal but that is in the past. The deal is not completed but he has an open mind. He is not afraid of the challenge from Spurs.'

This will be considered a risky move by Redknapp. Few players have crossed the North London divide. Among them are goalkeeper Pat Jennings, and defenders Willie Young (he was crap!) and Sol Campbell, with the latter's move an acrimonious free transfer.

The last former Arsenal player to sign for Spurs was David Bentley following a spell with Blackburn. But he had a troubled debut season and will be offloaded by Redknapp for a cut-price fee.

Vieira wants to return to London and recently ruled out a move to Birmingham. He is also keen to make the French World Cup squad.
An Inter source confirmed: 'The club are willing to discuss a transfer with Tottenham.'

Look, we've had a load of ITK about him and if the figures in this article are close - £35K a week and he is willing to take a big pay cut in order to play for us and try to force himself into the French WC team then I can't really see a major problem with this. Yes, yes, he used to be a gooner, but I doubt we'd all have much problem signing Arshavin from them if we got the chance. If the player can make us a better team then I don't care who he used to play for!

    Harry what are you doing?

This guy is well past his best and was the scums captain ffs!!

I thought that you were a Spurs fan as a youngster so you would know what this means to the fans! If we were stealing one of their top players it would be different but to sign him now :eek:mg: I can hear the sniggers already :bang:

There must be a gazillion midfielders out there better and without the history so could you go get one of them please!

But Arshavin is good. And not the footballer I hated most, more than any other by a country mile throughout the late nineties and early noughties.

This is the crux of your entire argument. I really don't understand what this has to do with anything. Vieira is a class player with superb, proven leadership skills and fantastic vision and awareness. He's a World Cup and European Championship winner as well.

The fact that he played for Arsenal is completely irrelevant and I really wish Spurs fans of this mindset would take a step back from the rivalry and look at the bigger picture. We're talking about a player who could bring a lot to Tottenham.

No this is one of the points that I am making.

Yes Viera was a class player in his day and has won the would Cup and European Cup but this was a long time ago and he is no longer the player that he was. Did you not see him against Man U last season? The crux of your arguement is that he once was........ On this basis perhaps signing Figo is not such a bad idea then?
As said before if this were Arshavin or Fabregas I would be all for it but lets be fair he is no longer setting the world alight is he and there must be better options out there.

    STATS

    2008-09 not exactly inspiring

Get him as backup for Pala and throw him on in the derby.... Wouldn't that be amazing if he scored!

Yes I saw him against Man Utd last season, but that was one game. He wouldn't still be playing at the top level if he was past his best. Players like Vieira, Beckham, Figo, Cannavaro, Maldini, Sheringham etc all play/ed well into their 30s at the highest level, some even continuing to do so at international level. They might have lost a bit of pace but they bring a wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding instead. This is invaluable. Look at Davids. He came to Spurs aged 32 and bossed the midfield. We finished 5th in both seasons that he played for us.

The crux of MY argument is that you are generalising and I think you're using the "used to play for Arsenal" argument to help support an otherwise unjust viewpoint.
  9. Reece
lol he's had a red card in every season of his career apart from last season according to those espn stats

He wouldn't still be playing at the top level if he was past his best.

    He's not, he's playing in Italy! :)

Lets face it Davids came in when our midfield needed it as it was young, inexperienced and had no bite. Viera would have to play second fiddle to Palacios, can not cover the ground of Jenas (no matter what you think of him), doesn't have the skill or inventivness of Modric or the passing range of Hudd so I don't know where he would fit in and improve us.
I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one

putting aside the Arsenal thing for a moment and with this particular player that is very very hard to do - this guy is finished at the top level of football and simply cant cut it anymore. Focus on bringing in somebody relevant and fresh.
  12. Riandor
Couldn't care less who he used to play for either... as long as he can still cut it in the premiership & as long as he can do the job for Spurs, that's all that matters.

Like Davids did, we should also not underestimate the wealth of knowledge and experience he can pass on to our younger players as well as players like Wilson.

WOuld not be a bad signing in my book.

  14. pezinhoTHFC
Why this particular player? Surely ALL ex Arsenal players fall into that category?

This is another prime example of someone who can't get to grips with Spurs potentially signing an ex-Arsenal player - I mean, Heaven forbid.

You don't seem to understand that the "joke" (if there is one) would be on Arsenal as it would be THEIR ex player 'being a traitor' (if that's how you're looking at it).
  15. Chedozie
I think he's the type of player we need, our midfield starting 3, Modric, Lennon and Wilson are young and still quite inexperienced.

Our team lacks leadership, Vieria has enough ability to sit in and tell others what to do, like Naybet and Davids did.

I don't like arsenal players, but this guy plays for Inter Milan. His soul has already been purged.
  16. pezinhoTHFC
haha, yeah fair enough mate! I do see your point about fitting him in, but I guess that would be the challenge for him and for Redknapp.
  17. blankom
Yeah! Agree with above. Doesn't matter if he used to be a gooner. I think L'Arse will be more pissed about this potential signing than we will - one more reason to sign him.

Vieira is IMO just the DM we need in backup for Palacios.

The reason why many of us disliked him when he was at Woolwich was because he was one of their key players.
  18. tttcowan
The more I think about it the more I think this will be a great call from Harry, we need back up for palacios espieically now we've sold zokora and if we can get him for free and on as a pay as you play contract its win win. His motivation will be getting in the French squad for the world cup and if he's half as good as he once was then he'd be a descent squad player... Lets not forget how much worse arsenal got after he left and the fact there still trying to replace him... There's also Harrys rep of picking up out of favour players like this and getting one or two more seasons out of them when they reach close to there previous best... Kanu and James at pompey spring to mind... Could be a very shrewd move.
  19. pezinhoTHFC
    A very good point
