FML I hated this guy.
The only thing he "built" was a lie. Bale was a phenomenon that season, but was already coming to that point before AVB arrived.

He's never done any better than us since us, was fucking dire in his short 2nd season and, after slagging the fans off after a shit 1-0 (penalty) win over Hull, became my most despised ex boss.

Levy et al saw what we all saw, sorry but record points hall with the most boring football I have every seen us play in my 30 years of support.

I genuinely liked AVB, the club maybe should have been more patient but he just wasn’t quite the right fit.

One thing is certain Pochettino’s success has basically killed all debate over Redknapp, Sherwood and AVB stone dead.

He's far beyond them all.

I'm curious, did you go and watch any games live under AVB?
It was painful.

True. Redknapp deserves to be placed above the other two and not lumbered with them though!

This guy sucked the life out of the club with his anti football. He was obsessed with possession football, but we were so impotent with it that teams just let us have the ball in our half and watched us go nowhere with it.

As mentioned above, without Bale he’d Have been sacked long before he eventually left.

He was dead to me from the moment he discarded Rafa.

… He was dead to me from the moment he discarded Rafa.

I won't go that far, but I remember thinking that if his tenure didn't work out in the end, unceremoniously dumping VdV would be the thing that I would remember (and resent) him for the most. And so it is.

… Well, that and a lot of sideways passing.

I liked AVB, I will always think he tried to make the best out of a bad situation. Have no grudges towards him and I'm certain that there is truth to his version of his time at the club. Levy did string him along to some degree.

He said: “In April, we started planning for the next season. I offered some names to buy and sell, but during the transfer window, the board didn’t listen and quickly destroyed everything we’d created.”

I think this is true.

What an arse. The football was awful, and he had reached the end of the line with us - it happens in football, and he was duly compensated.
Still remember vividly that awful home game against Liverpool (his last) when we got totally hammered, looking up at the directors box where Levy had his black gloves on with a face like an assassin and willing him to pull the trigger, which he duly did.

Didn't like how certain media treated him. It felt like they purposefully wanted to sink him and I think it's because he didn't have a playing career so they felt they could attack him and not get the "if you've ever played the game" line thrown back in their faces.
