I've been wondering about this guy for some time now. I've watched him play a handful of games for us and to be honest, he's been a bit Marmite. Some brilliant performances and some absolutely rotten ones. I don't really know what to make of him. Do we need to upgrade him, or should we see what he's like under new management?

(ffs) give him time. It is quite a jump from the romanian league to the Premier League.

Hopefully he has now a coach who can work consistent with him. Potential obvious there. Should be our third choice CB.

The ffs seems unnecessary given the fact the OP has given the option to give him more time.

For what it is worth, worth at least another season or two.

Young, joined from Romanian football, didn't have a full pre-season, no consistent back 4 alongside him, 2 coaches and general inner turmoil within the dressing room.

I'm prepared to give him more time.

That said, the decision to let Caulker go to bring him in was, and remains, questionable imo.

Do we need to upgrade him
So, out of the 7 signings we made last summer, people have already suggested we should get rid of: Paulinho, Soldado, Chadli, Chiriches (and Capoue nearly went in January to Napoli)

Seriously, this is just nonsensical.

Vlad is a good footballer. He's very comfortable with the ball and has plenty (maybe a bit too much) confidence. He's not the type for the long hoof up the pitch. As such, I think he will have plenty of appeal for Poch. He does lack a bit of physicality though which may be an issue. Game time is the only way we'll really find out what he's made of.

Do you think its impossible for us to buy a load of not very good players?

Is it that nonsensical given most of their performances last season?

Maybe we should just admit that last summer was a travesty bar Eriksen instead of sticking up for these numbskulls.

Decent coaching under a good manager and he will come good, I really rate him, his looks also reminds of that character in the inbetweeners movie who randomly turns up then gets his mum and dad to come and get him...can't recall his name..

Do you have nothing in your vocabulary that isn't sensationalist? Such as between crap and brilliant? None of the players are crap. Obviously. You Sir just don't articulate your point, that they may have underperformed for a multitude of reasons, in a balanced and articulate way.

I tend to stick up for these numbskulls because they play for my favourite team.
They don't all become bad footballers overnight, give them a season with proper coaching, then write them off if they don't perform.

He's not good enough in the air, and can't fight with big physical forwards. If he can improve in those areas then great. But he might just not be suited to the premiership.

Under AVB and Sherwood, even Messi probably wouldn't look very good.

"numbskulls". Is that what you call "support". I can't deal with comments like that.

Strikes me as someone who looks very comfy when we have 65-70% of the ball and under little pressure and he can bring the ball out of defence, however when it comes to actual defending he has several areas where to be honest he has to sharpen up quite a bit. Obviously his physicality and dealing with aerial stuff is one, I have also noticed that he can be susceptible to balls played down his channel and in behind him. His last ditch defending though is pretty good and he seems to find a way to recover and make a challenge, even if he doesn't always look completely in control.

Actually thinking about it, even with the ball bringing it out of defence I cannot remember much of actual quality that really added to the play. Lots of eye catching moments, but adding up to very little. Has a tendency to run down a blind alley and take on too much. Needs to pick and choose his moments more carefully.

He has quality, but things to work on. Someone who should be persisted with, but we need to see the improvement and consistency over the next year or so.

So if we give all the players who had their debut season last year a bit more time.......do you think we will finish in the Top 4 next year?

I'd mainly agree with that. Although I think he did better defensively than what you're giving him credit for. He was our best CB last season IMO and was the best of the seven signings in the first half of last season and the second best overall. I was impressed with him for the most part, but it does seem he can crumble under pressure.
