Wanyama is back. What does this mean for the Squad?

I think if we have a fully fit squad, then we starts with a 5 man midfield and a back four. Dier, as our best utility player, but not the absolute best in his respective positions, misses out as a result.

Dembele played well that game, but when he came of the game was already won, not really possible to judge the performance change in those circumstances.

I disagree with the game already being won being the reason. Last season the players were trying to win Hugo most clean sheets and now we happy to let opposition score. If that's the attitude of the players then explains why we are not playing at the same level as last season. Poch should have just put youngsters on then.

.. and yet it was Hugo who let two very soft goals in.

Sure but even last season. Even when he was part of the team which beat Madrid he is overlooked by posters... Poor guy.

Happy Poch rates him highly though.
I'm not stopping you from being a fan. I see his value. But my main (and actually only) issue is that he doesn't have a specific feature that he is better at then anybody else in the squad. He is not among our three best CBs, because he hasn't been wanting to put in the work to develop for that. For CM, He is not our best destroyer, not our best passer and not our best ball retainer. If Dier could figure how to hone one skill that he could excel in, I think he would be a given part of a first 11. As long as that is not the case, for me, in selecting the 11 best Spurs player, he just about doesn't make it. Now, the 11 best guys hardly ever play together anyway, for many, many reasons, leading to loads of game time for Dier (luckily for you ;)). And as far as being part of one epic vitcory, well, that doesn't prove anybody's squad status.

I get your point. I do.... Yes i have a soft spot for the guy sure.. I just think he is undervalued thats all.

Btw.. Plenty games last season where strongest available 11 and he played.
But i understand he is not your 1st 11.

Totally agree that he’s undervalued by a lot of our fans, but also understand that with everyone fit and in form, he’s not nessesarily one of our best 11 (in the systems we play).

Last season he was our 3rd CB in the three, but now Sanchez has made that spot his own, Wanyama performs the holding midfielder role more effectively and pairing them both together in the middle of the park is far too nagative.

However, modern day football isn’t about best 11’s and even if most don’t think he’d make ours, he’ll still get loads of game time.

He’s a slight victim of the mr versatile tag, but he’s a hugely important player for us both on and off the pitch.

So Hugo let's in soft goals therefore we should stop defending or lose control of midfield? Maybe we should stop passing to Kane in august since he doesn't want to score during summer holidays?

What a strange post!? You honestly think the players were happy to concede goals and stopped defending? Did you watch the game?

Firstly, we didn't stop defending, there was some fabulous defending, especially by Vertonghen, when we had already won the game. Secondly, we did not lose the midfield, Southampton threw on two more attackers and went for it, and that was why they created chances in the last 20 minutes when the game resembled a basketball match. Lastly, we would have kept a clean sheet if Lloris had not got beaten at his near post (again) and hadn't flapped at a corner (again). Putting youngsters on would not have stopped either from happening, and would just have exposed Lloris further.

No chance Poch turns Dier into a squad player, and no chance Dier stays here as a squad player.

Wanyama is better as a "destroyer" , but Dier plays the position differently, and is still very effective as a shield in front of the back line. Both players need a more creative player along side - so the bigger worry for me is that Poch will play them together - and that is when we lack the creativity and ball control in the Midfield.

Wanyama/Dier Dembele/Winks

Eriksen Alli Son

Kane

Sorted.

Problems arise when Toby is back but if he’s really kicking up a fuss about his contract then this won’t be an issue as he’ll be getting flogged for an extortionate amount of money. He’s not been the same player this season.

I agree with Hengy1 that Toby is a bit off his extremely high standard last year; but nevertheless he is still playing very well before his injury.

Played well but not to the heights we’ve come accustomed too. It’s no coincidence that Alli whom was also fannying about over sorting a new agent has only started to show up once this was sorted. It was the same last season with Eriksen, he was AWOL prior to agreeing a new contract, then all of a sudden he was fantastic.

I'm not sure it is. Son is a mainstay now, his pace, directness and exceptional movement is integral to the way we attack. We simply attack better as a side when he's in the team.

Dembele has been phenomenal, but he's just not quite as effective as he has been.

I think moving Eriksen a little deeper would improve our passing from midfield, he covers so much ground anyway.

Squad game and all, but if I were picking our absolute best eleven at the moment, mine would be:

Lloris

Alderweireld
Sanchez
Vertonghen

Aurier
Wanyama
Eriksen
Rose

Son
Dele

Kane
