I suspect that the bigger stadiums could become available if the NRL's and AFL's palms were greased.It's not the most popular sport there but generally speaking Aussies are big into sport generally and if they were hosting it everyone would get involved I'm sure. If nothing else it's an excuse to have a party and get pissed with your mates so I'm sure they wouldn't take too much convincing.
One of the main problems in Australia would be that the WC takes place (well, usually takes place) in June/July which would be right in the middle of the NRL and AFL seasons out there, which could be an issue due to the bigger stadiums all being in use for other events.

Yeah I'm sure there's a solution to be found, just pointing out that it's one obsticle that would have to be dealt with.
