    SPURS NEWS:

TEEMU Tainio this week challenged his Spurs team-mates to end the club's dismal away form - if only for the sake of the long-suffering fans.

    Source: Hamhigh.co.uk

Tottenham, who have yet to win on the road in the Premiership this season, visit Manchester City on Sunday and the Finland midfielder feels the time has come to match their excellent home form.

In stark contrast, the Lilywhites, who hammered Charlton 5-1 at the Lane on Saturday, have not lost at home in the league since August, winning nine straight games in all competitions before last night's Uefa Cup clash with Dinamo Bucharest.

"We must start to take points away from home and give our travelling fans a little bit back," Tainio told Express Sport.

"Our home form has been really good and hopefully we will keep winning.

"We have a great stadium and great fans, and it is always a pleasure to play at the Lane.

"But we have to concentrate on away games where we have not done very well. We have to start taking points away from home as well."

Tainio returned to the Spurs side in their Uefa Cup win at Bayer Leverkusen last month after a hernia operation which kept him out for seven weeks.

"I had the same problem five years ago - it came back," he explained.

"It is difficult when you get injured early in the season. It was my fifth operation in all and my second hernia, so you get used to them.

"It was hard to come back when you see the lads playing and you are just running. But I am happy to be back with the group - and to be playing."

Indeed, Martin Jol wasted little time in handing the player they call Tiger at the Lane a place straight back in his starting 11 despite the glut of quality midfielders at the club.

Although Tainio was rested for the Wigan game three days after the Leverkusen clash he lined up in the north London derby against Arsenal at The Emirates.

And the Finn also started against Charlton and laid down a marker for the Manchester City clash with his strong performance in the rout, scoring the second of the five goals against the Addicks.

He's a great player on his day so I'd have to disagree, I think hes the type we need for the away games, the Hud too. I fancy us to cause what the bookies would call a 'slight upset' on Sunday....

City's home form certainly seems pretty solid: 4 wins, 4 draws and no defeats. But suddenly it doesn't look so impressive when you look at their opponents. Their win against Arsenal was excellent, but their other wins have come against poor away teams: West Ham (0 away wins so far), Boro (0 away wins so far), Fulham (1 away win so far). They've dropped two points at home against Portsmouth, Sheffield United, Newcastle and Watford. Apart from Arsenal and Pompey, all six of their home opponents are now in the bottom 8. So their stats are a bit misleading. If it was a normal week without a European game, I'd be pretty confident of us getting three points. Now it's pretty even. I'd think that a 1-1 draw isn't far off.

Nice post. Informative and useful. Lets hope City are still reeling from that defeat to Manure and get our away form going in the right direction.

It's not fair to criticise the guy, he wears his heart on his sleeve and he's a SPURS fan. I always feel confident when he's on the team sheet, he had a shite game against the goons-- but was just recivering from injury-- he was a dynamo at highbury in the infamous battle for fourth sport earlier this year. As yids, I urge any Taino-haters to please be a bit patient with the bloke. He never gives up, and he gives a shit. Versatile player as well, great squad player that doesn't moan like all the other so-called 'professionals'. Just my 2 cents.
