that's correct we need to build on it, but instead of deals ranging from 8-20m, we are now needing to spend 50-70m to improve, and Zaha and Martial are not good enough to pay that amount out.
I'm not saying your wrong but if we don't buy one of them who do we buy because for years the club has looked for value but when clubs like Everton or west are paying 40-50m for average to good players where does that leave us.
Do we throw caution to the wind which is not the club's MO or do we wait around to find the value that may no longer be there given the inflated prices for average player's now on offer.

The problem with Levy is he's only good for certain things - at certain times.

Building a world class stadium - YES
Running a solvent, stable business and making profit - YES
Buying young potential and good players on the cheap - YES
Getting a last minute bargain of a player that isn't world class - YES
buying world class players in their prime - NO

Hence the reason Baldini imho was superb for us in terms of his abilities. Forget the fact that the players were hit and miss, with a manager like Poch I feel a DoF was essential and what we have been missing. It would have given us a chance to buy the players we needed and which Poch wanted.

The sad fact is, Levy has let Poch and the club down on players.
We needed at least 3 quality players; someone up top, someone in the middle and a CB. Poch clearly had names of his preferred players and he clearly said we needed to be brave months ago. Levy should have gone all out for those 3 players - but he didn't. Now we're in familiar territory again. No players, TW closing and none of the preferred 1st choice players available due to Levy faffing around.
You cant say it will all work out cos it wont. Martial was our #1 target. (Why I have no idea cos Utd has never sold a world class player to any PL club - especially us) so they should have had someone else on that list equal in quality to Martial and said to Utd take it or leave it and then swiftly move onto the other top attacking target. And we should have already secured the services of said quality striker by now. Instead we've wasted the whole TW on Martial like a person drooling over a Ferrari in the showroom knowing full well we cant afford the car or the salesman wont sell to us cos he doesn't like us! We need to get over ourselves and Levy should have stopped this stupid game he plays every TW, going for players from clubs that would never wish to sell to us in the first place!!!

What i'm certain of is that we absolutely wont get the players Poch wanted as his first choice and instead, we'll get some odd players that we either pay over the odds for (just for Levy to say to the fans and Poch, 'look, here, I've proved, i'm ballsy enough to pay large on players'), or he'll buy a great player that was just never what we were after or needed.

Even when the TW closes early, Levy still conspires to cock up our season preparations by not buying the right players before preseason tours and gives the manager no time again to get the player ready...
Earlier on in the TW we were interested in Shaqiri - a no brainer player with skills and PL experience that would be perfect for us, but due to faffing around Pool get him and we get knocked back on a Championship player. All this BS about homegrown ITK... WALOB I say. Do you see any of the other top 4 teams worried about homegrown rules??? Their answer is "homegrown or lose a spot? Sod it, I'll buy world class and you can stick your extra spot! I'll put on a world class game changer for CL and you can dick around sticking on your 2nd rate player instead cos you just wasted that spot on someone that aint a game a changer"
That's their mentality. That's a winning mentality. Where has homegrown got us.....the Title? FA Cup?

We always mess around in the TW when we should go all out when we need to. We never get the player we need and we wont this window either.

Edit. BTW I will grant you VdV was a great player as a last minute deal, but that's the only 1 Levy has ever bought - it was a one-off.

the whole post is way too long, especially coming from a poster that has banged on about a player like Boufal all 1 summer, and all he did was score 2 good goals, but continuously piss his coach off and did little else on the field.

we need 3 players in the positions you suggest, and I believe we apparently had 150 in the coffers to spend with the expectancy of getting money in for Toby and Dembele. due to Belgium making the final weekend of the WC, and Inter pulling out, we missed the chance to sell Dembele to China as their window closed earlier. Other than giving him away, Dembele will know he wants to join a club when they come in, Levy can't force players to leave, and he can't force players to join.

anyway apparently when we signed Sanchez last season, apparently there was a deal to discuss de Ligt, and apparently 45m would most probably seal the deal. early on I believe we offered them 48m, they now want 70m keep the player for 1-2 seasons, so how is that backing Poch.

at the start, I do believe we offered 55m for Martial, Utd won't sell to a rival, and now want 89m, what do you expect Levy to do?

if he done those 2 deals we would of spent 159m and only got 1 player, and wouldn't have the money to even consider a CM

the thing is the higher you climb up the ladder the more expensive players become, and when you fuck yourselves up buying players years gone by that didn't work but got them in because player A-Y didn't want to sign, and the manager still needs a player you are stuck with Z. because of the last few seasons we now don't have enough HG players and way too many non HG, so a lot harder to go shopping abroad, and even though there are most probably other Martial's and Zaha's out there in the big world of sport, we can't take a chance in case they turn out to be a GKN, or worse.

we just don't have enough resources to buy 3 quality when they have gone from 50 to 70m
