He tried to be too clever.

He’s gone to ground. ( I wish they’d look it up and find out what “going to ground” means. It means hiding, by the way.)

When the big boys come calling.

If you need a goal, bring on Defoe.

Big Sam does what it says on the tin.

Etc etc.

Andy Gray's "Take a bow, son" always got up my nose for some reason.
Keyes to Gray: "Is it a question of who wants it more?"

Comes from the theatre doesn't it? Early doors meaning the doors are open early so you can get in well before the show starts. Certainly a preferable Ron Atkinson cliché to him claiming that Desailly was "what is known in some circles as a f*cking lazy thick [n word]", as if it was a bit of well-known football terminology no different to "water carrier" or "false nine".

“No backlift.”
This. Drives me fucking insane. As does its variant 'hardly any backlift' which, when you look at the replay, tends to mean his foot was below head level when he drew it back. Utter stupid fucking nonsense. Usually uttered by dickheads like Tony Gale.

Another one is 'great touch for a big man'. So only players under about 5'8" can be skillful. I've got news for any of the fucking retards who say this: Hoddle was over 6', as was Zidane, Cruyff was hardly a midget, and Pele was 5'10 (to be fair, Hoddle, Zidane and Pele probably all still are). To state the bleeding obvious, having 'great touch' has absolutely nothing to do with how 'big' somebody is, and just as many 'big' men as 'small' men have it.

I feel better now. Thanks to Spurslove for giving me somewhere to vent.

FFS Dele... It’s one of those days for him... Get in there... We’ve got Alli, I just don’t think you understand (oh the irony).

The thing is that cliches
usually have an element of truth in them
undeniably so in some cases.
And were once fresh and insightful.

It's the repetition that turns them into cliches,
but they can still have an element of truth.

Just saying.

Bought the foul.

Knew what he was doing.

Anticipated the contact.

Gone to ground.

Looks on to me.

Dangled a leg.

Left a foot in.

30 seconds into the game. "They've started brightly"

"Back of the net"
Technically it's the front of the net.

They have legs in this team.

Manager will have to earn his money at half time/They'll get a rocket at half time.

Vital that they score the next goal.

"Row Z"

"No desire"

Needs to make drastic changes at half time.

I try to avoid clichés like the plague but anyway...

"Can they hold on to him"
"Other clubs will be sniffing around if they don't win anything this season"

You realize that saying you avoid something “like the plague” is cliche though, right?

Sky about Poch "he will bo off to Man Until ;Chelsea or PSG"
Sky about most spurs players "he will be off if they don't pay him more money"
Sky about most spurs players "he will be looking to move on if they don't win a trophy soon"ignoring the fact that only two English clubs have won trophies this year
Sky are tossers

Any time the word "battle" is used.

It's not war, it's football, have some fucking perspective, after all football is much more serious than war.
