Before MOTD ruins it for me, is it possible for a kind fan to give a brief & honest account about was good? What was bad? What could we improve upon?

After hearing Phil Thompson's 'report' I have this horrible feeling that Kaboul & co at the back weren't at their best. Perhaps showing the same signs of disorganisation that plagued us last year.

How long will it be before Vertonghen is pressed back into service? Will the Poch now put the squeeze on the Mussacchio deal & ask for it to be hastened through?

Answers on a postcard please.

Didn't see much of the quick pressing from Spurs as I had expected, good win though and all credit to Dier. Thought Holtby made his presence felt too.

This is not a postcard, but a nutshell: Kaboul was completely rusty; if West Ham have half decent strikers, we would be certainly have lost. Dier was the man of the match, a £4M player outshining a £30M one in Eric Lamela, who showed neat touches but not the dynamism we were hoping for. Hotby and Townsend, when they came on, displayed the required energy and urgency. The midfield trio of Capoule, Bentelab and Erickson were capable and the Frenchman made some vital interceptions. Naughton's sending off, and even the penalty, was unfair--a mistake by the linesman, IMO. But the extra fitness sessions definitely paid off, as we were still full of running, and indeed scored the winner in the 91st minute, even as we played one man short for almost half the game.

Can't agree with Ginola007 pen view. Naughton had both hands above his head and
it was a great save lol. Def pen imo & if we have one like that & don't get it given I'd be bloody livid.
Pretty fair assessment on rest of it though.

I fail to see how Franco Baldini can justify spending nearly 30 Mil on Lamela. All his play is based on laying the ball off with a flick or pass..We are supposed to believe that this kid, that ive never seen beat a man, can suddenly be as dynamic as someone like Bale is a farce. Hatem Ben Ahfa is the type of player that could do that and would have been far cheaper. We are Tottenham not Madrid we cannot afford to spend that kind of money on a unproven prospect..smh

Kaboul was garbage and we were lucky to get away with it in this game.
Capoue did well but is not a CB.

Dier - stand out player.

Naughton unlucky - yes to the penalty (but he we so close to the ball you could argue not). Def not a red card. Ever.

Foy - gooner.

Well, you are half right.

But how you could at all even expect to compare the dynamism of a £30M player to that of the most expensive player in history, is another question entirely.

I'll still believe in Erik, at least he looks damn good in our new kit. Also love seeing Ade with the cornrows, something about them just give me confidence.

My 2 cents:

  1. Danny Rose was simply outplayed by Downing, if ever we needed reinforcements, its here. So many crosses came over when SD stepped inside. Sorry not good enough.
  2. CB Kaboom and Dier [later Capoue] positions continually under pressure from these accurate crosses which had no business coming over so regularly.
  3. RB Naughton [later Dier] had the flank mostly under control. Of course was glad that Dier ended up in RB as really he had no business being at the end of the Kane through-ball. What a sight! :D
  4. Eriksen looked good early on as did Lamela but did peter out midway through the first half and leading up to the Noble penalty. We were simply over-run at this stage and how we managed to keep them out was a minor miracle inter-spaced with some clown close control by Cole [same that at double speed].
  5. Ade worked hard as did Bentaleb [the boy does look like he is getting better].
  6. Liked the introduction of Townsend and Holtby, brought a lot more buzzing energy to the game. And the usual 50 yard screamers from Townsend.
  7. Things looked like the were going to end in a draw, and then Lloris reminds us why he is such a damned fine keeper. We need to keep this guy for as long as we can.
  8. Kane substitution, well home-grown, 1 assist... enough said.

I didn't think either guys should have been sent off. Penalty and foul yes but I couldn't be convinced of intent in either. In the first 10 minutes West Ham couldn't get out of their half and we were having all the possession without really creating chances then they started to come into it. It was evens until the sending off and we weathered pressure till the other sending off evened it up again.
30 minutes of Townsend was better than 60 of Lamela and I fail to see how anyone could say he looked good (Eriksen wasn't at his best either). I have not seen a single piece of quality from him in any prem game. I think from the clamour to see him play by some its no surprise to see rose tinted glasses for his performances too.

A player who likes to come inside and is strong crossing on the other foot is going to cause problems if you don't double up on him. Downing doesn't believe he can beat Rose going outside so he crosses with the other foot (doesn't need to beat Rose), Rose later tries to combat this and fouls Downing. Downing now knows he has something on Rose and if Rose commits to stopping him crossing by squaring his body and almost concede the line he can go outside. Against Rose on his own Downing knows he is going to win fouls or get his left foot crosses in. What would be your suggestion for Rose, Davis or anyone on their own to combat this?

To describe Kaboul's performance as 'Rusty' is spot on. He struggled early on, and once he found his rhythm he improved immensely and was winning battles and duels that he was unsuccessful at in the first half. Thats a result of 14 Premier League games in TWO seasons! Thankfully West Ham didn't look to target Dier early with Cole, as that would have been very unsettling for the lad.

Capoue for me looked very average. He should have had a full pre-season under his belt, but his passing despite being accurate, was very laboured, which meant when we had created a little bit of space it was gone due to his poor passing. Positionally he was ok, and made a good tracking tackle so if that is all that is expected from Pochettino then he will be ok, but Sandro moves the ball more quickly which says a lot.

Due to Capoue's ability to 'do a job' at CB he is a useful squad member, but if we sign another CB, I wouldn't be too disappointed to lose him if the offer is right for the Club...

Rose didn't dive in which was pleasing, but offered Downing too much time and space to cut back and use his right peg (which he used to great effect). Rose should have backed himself to let Downing try and go around him and cut it out, and then have Downing in his back pocket. Rose took the easy option by continually allowing the cut in, but we were very nearly unstuck a couple of times due to the quality of delivery.

Lamela looked like he was too eager to impress, and I fear injuries won't be far away if he continues to try drag backs all over the park. Fair play he put himself about more than I have seen, and his tackle on Noble, and then ability to push on and regather and deliver to Adebayor was something I didn't think he had in his locker, but is pleasing to see, and will endear him to our faithful support. I would like to see him out on the right of the three attaching midfielders with Walker at RB, that could be very dangerous.

Eriksen looked a little sluggish, and couldn't find his rhythm... Not a terrible performance, but looked like he was still adjusting to the style of the Premiership. Should have done better with the free kick, he replicated the pitch invasion well!

Bentalab for me improved also as the game went on. Hopefully Pochettino can help develop this kid to be the holding midfielder he wants to sign, as that would be great to watch some more academy graduates make the grade week in week out. Was a good effort later on to force a save.

Lennon proved he hasn't really improved, and Townsend looked more of a threat when he came on (To be fair it quickly became 10 v 10 which made it easier for Townsend... But he at least asks questions of defenders).

Holtby was good. Pressed well, and offered support well, him and Eriksen will be battling out all season for the chance to start IMHO.

Kane set up the winner, and well done to the young man. Making a difference when being brought on is what being a substitute is all about. He continues to impress. Can't do his confidence any harm also when it is at the expense of a 26m pound Spanish international!

All in all happy with the three points, and Pochettino's gamble with a couple of his substitutions. Promising indeed, and add our WC players back into the fold and perhaps another transfer we are looking good given we grinded that result out despite having our backs against the wall.

COYS!!!

He can't get any better mate. He had become so good he eventually retired. :D

Having just watched Morgan Schneiderlin against Liverpool I would love to see him in a Spurs shirt... Quality performance and twice the player Capoue looks!
