And we won.:)

Indeed. And a couple of things to note about it.

Firstly, we actually finished level on points with Brighton, going up only because our goal difference was nine better than theirs. Of course, the principal reason our goal difference was nine goals better was the 9-0 thumping of Bristol Rovers earlier in the season. A moment's applause, then, for the supine Pirates who not only allowed themselves to be thrashed that day, but also sold us Gary Mabbutt a couple of years later too. God love 'em, the high-pitched inbreds.

Secondly, given that superior goal difference, all we needed on the last day of the season was a draw. Intriguingly, our opponents in that last game were Southampton who also needed a point to be absolutely certain of promotion. And, strike me down with a feather if the game didn't end up 0-0. Brighton fans, as you may guess, were not best pleased, so much so that Goldstone Ghosts - Attila the Stockbroker's poem covering the entire history of Brighton FC - has a line dedicated to the 'obscene stitch-up' as he calls it. I've seen some Southampton fans' comments on the game and they're undecided whether it was fixed or not, although one does say "Tony Funnell hit the post in the 1st half and Bally slapped him", which is telling. :cautious:

One last thing. We only needed a point on that day because we'd beaten Hull 1-0 in the game before. Steve Perryman scored the winner late on, but the only reason he was able to stick the ball in the net is because John Duncan had clashed with their keeper who had then dropped the ball. Hull's players were incandescent but, as Perryman noted, it would have taken a brave referee to disallow it.

All things considered then, we came really close to not going up that season, which would have had a fundamental impact on the club. No promotion means no Ardiles and Villa. No Ardiles and Villa means no FA Cup win in 1981, no 'Ossie's going up to Wembley', no follow-up success in the FA Cup and UEFA Cup and, frankly, no Tottenham as we currently know and love it.

Brighton, on the other hand, went on to famously not win the 1983 FA Cup Final and do little else of note in the following 35 years.

The Gods of football may have fucked us royally many times since, but that was one time when they did OK by us.

Atilla the stockbroker! That takes me back. What’s the difference between Glenn Hoddle and a ballerina? A ballerina can’t take free kicks. LMAO. Not.

So how are the Terriers' fans feeling?

Looking forward to it? Not overly...

"I've got to say, I'm looking forward to the Spurs game as much as a visit from the mother-in-law."

"That's what pisses me off. I've waited 40 years to see games like that. Now I just dread them. It is all so bloody predictable."

"Last season I was looking forward to the big teams visiting, this season it's the lesser teams I want to see."

So what are the tactics?

"Keep it tight. Stay in the game. Create nothing & lose 3 nil."

Sounds like a plan. But Spurs have played an extra game in mid-week and have CL coming up on Wednesday. That must have an effect on our energy levels, surely.

"Spurs could bum each other to death for 8 hours before kick off, and still walk past us."

OK, then. So, to sum up.

"I think Tottenham are going to tear us a new arsehole. In fact, by the time we’ve got to Christmas we’ll have that many arseholes it’ll be like being at a Leeds match."

Cardiff: (confident bunch because we lost to Barca....)

'I'm worried about the pitch. It's not going to suit our footballing style.'

'Spurs are there for the taking Saturday.'

'I think we will thrash them on the evidence of tonight ,our season beings Saturday ,followed by a win v Fulham ,topped by a win at plastic fan scumsville'

'I would play either Murphy or Reid to run down the middle at their defence which looks very shaky.'

They also have a prediction thread here which suggests less confidence: http://www.ccmb.co.uk/showthread.ph...NHAM/page7&s=411128e70f6e0d8005971ddba1767e32

Anyone want to give us youngsters some background knowledge on this 1978 game? Sounds pretty grim
I was there as a pre pubescent 10 year old. Never been so frightened. Bearing in mind it was 40 years ago I seem remember our fans climbing up the separating fence and doing a decent job of ripping it down.
I think we were in a corner of the ground and along one side. We had a player sent off (can't remember who) and all hell broke loose.

Spammers from KUMB on their Super World Cup Hardcore Mega Arch Rivals Match of all Matches Ultrafinal of the Gods Supergame:

'A repeat performance of the Manchester United game , please .'

'so a few issues after a poor result last night. whoever wears the shirt must be 100% supported against this mob.
1-0 hammers. arnie'

'Think Tottenham will be a tougher game then Man U, closer to Chelsea quality.'

'indeed it will be a battle and we must start well. have a first half like last night and we will be 3 down !

show commitment and desire and we can win this and the cup game. '

'Depending on results going their way, our north London chums COULD go top should we lose to them. Please let's not let that happen. '

'I an see Pellegrini setting us up similar to the Everton and Chelsea games letting Tottenham come at us then catching them on the break .

This is almost a carbon copy of last season's fixtures when we played Tottenham early on and then met them in the same competition in the same round , the conspiracy theorists amongst us might think that it was being done deliberately .

I don't need to remind you guys that we lost to Tottenham in the League and beat them in the League Cup in what was probably our best display of the season under Slaven Bilic , however it wasn't enough to keep him his job and we couldn't keep up the momentum against Arsenal in the Quarter Finals under our new manager , David Moyes .

The last big break did us the power of good coming back from 4 consecutive defeats to beat Everton 1-3 , let us hope this coming break has similar restorative powers .

Prediction -

I think we'll beat them in the Premier League and in the Carabao Cup , I have every faith in this new look West Ham United under Manuel Pellegrini .'

'One things for sure, it is vital we take our chances against them. How often do they not score? I would like to see the stats of how often they don't score in games in all competitions, as I feel like they rarely do. Even when they lose they seem to get a goal. So I don't want to be seeing any sitters. When we get our chances for f*cksake take them!

Hopefully Arnie is fitter and raring to go. We desperately need more players to raise their game from an attacking perspective. For me we are relying far too much on Arnie to create, score goals. If he doesn't turn up we're f*cked. So I want to see Yarmalenko to not keep going into hiding which he is doing in spells in the last couple games. And as good as some of the flashes have been, I really want to see a big performance from Anderson. He hasn't had a full match yet really when he has completely stole the show. No better game to start.

I would stick with Masuaku for this game. Remember they have Tripper and the inform Moura on their right hand side. So we need pace.

Yarmalenko was poor against Brighton, but I'd give him another chance. If he does nothing again then I'd drop him for Snodgrass next game.

I don't think Spurs have direct pacy players on the left as that's the only change I'd make. Drop Zabaleta for Fredricks. But that's only for tactical reasons. Not because Zabaleta isn't playing well. But from what I can remember they tend to go with Son, or Lamela more on the left.

If anything I'd make more changes on the bench! Antonio to disappear being one as he literally offers nothing. He is good for nothing. There's no point having him on the bench.

I believe I read somewhere p*sstaker Carroll is back for this? I don't like the c*nt and want him out of the club next summer at the latest. But as long as he's fit I'd still use him to have him to come off the bench and hopefully cause damage. Spurs have been weak with defending some set pieces, so let's try and take advantage
1f44d.png
and hopefully he can teach Balbuena to score easy headers.'

'Would be very happy with a draw. This lot have a physicality to their game that Chelsea don’t and Man Utd didn’t bring with them.

Want to beat them in the cup
icon_cool.gif
'

'The two teams we have thus far beaten have wilted in the face of continued pressure after our first goal.

However, Spurs are a different stripe from them; settled as a team, young (in terms of average age) and have won 70% of their matches.

A draw? Fine by me. '

'two wins against this lot would be great but I can see a draw in the league and a win in the cup for us.

league wise the only change maybe snoddy for yarmolenko who was poor.

Hernandez on bench for perez .think this game will be too early for the carthorse. expect him to appear and score the winner against them in the cup. '

'It wouldn't surprise me if Hernandez made the starting eleven for this one. Little nippy strikers with decent movement are what Spurs dont like.
I would like to see snodgrass get a game if for nothing else but his tremendous set piece delivery, as Spurs have struggled defending corners this season '

'Most spurs fans I know think that set pieces are their Achilles heel this season '

'Tough game - probably a 2-3 goal defeat, but as long as we are in the match that’s fine. More about performance than result for me. '

'Chelsea have been in much better form than them this season especially goal-scoring wise.

I reckon we can frustrate them like we did with Chelsea. Then it will come down to who can take the few chances that the game presents them with.

Fabianski has a good game and we can come out of this relatively unscathed.

A hard-fought 0-0, or a scrappy 1-0 for either side I reckon. '

'Different breed this lot. Go on and on and on about how “small time” West Ham are, whilst claiming they’re the biggest side in North London after a couple of good seasons.

They don’t look that great defensively this season, so I’m confident our front three can cause some damage. Lucas Moura looks a decent player with bundles of pace. A bit of a b*stard that is is coming after the international break, as the likes of Eriksen and Alli could most likely return. '

'Take Kane out of their side and they become quite ordinary and definitely not a top four team. Still can't believe how many goals the tosser has scored over the last few years. He was quite donkey like as a youngster during his loan spell at Milkwall. '

'Looks like Eriksen & Vertonghen are out for the game, Eriksen could be out for months according to Talksport this morning, huge blow for them!. Vertonghen hamstring, so a chance he could be fit I guess.

They are winning ugly from what I have seen of the highlights, Moura looks a player though, and we all know what Kane can do.

Tough game, but I honestly don't fear anyone bar Man C & Liverpool. Think our attitude will be spot on from 1st to 90th, which will make it a tight game with us coming out winning 34-32...or 2-1 maybe. '

'We'll do well in this game. We'll struggle more against Burnley. '

'I think the fact we lost to Brighton means we will be well up for this. If we had turned the Seagulls over I feel we would've been smashed by Spurs.

Close game, Arnie will score and so will Kane, it just depends who gets that extra one to take home the points. '

'Given our record this season (4 points in 4 games from top 6 teams, 3 points in 1 game against the also rans and 0 from 3 of the bottom 10) we have to be going into this game with hope of a point at least.

If we can keep it tight and nick the first goal I think we'll win, drop the first goal especially early and I think it will get messy. I think a solid performance and a 2-2 draw is not unlikely. '

Definitely watched us thoroughly when Kane's been out injured.

Ah, I see what he's done there. He's taken the name of a football club and added his own little twist. Smart. Real smart.

So Mark Noble has come out and said West Ham and Spurs have had similar starts to the season. This has been rightly mocked on fb.

On one of the forums, a guy has posted this;

Spurs
W6 D1 L4 F20 A15 GD+5

West Ham
W5 D1 L4 F19 A14 GD+5

Not vastly different is it?

—————

It was then pointed out that he’s included West Ham’s wins against Macclesfield and Wimbledon in the league cup in comparison to our losses at Inter and Barca ??? He was then put in his place by several Spurs fans....

What a **** ?
