PAUL MERSON Column in Daily Star

Harry Kane for Real Madrid

HARRY KANE is the best striker in the world and what he has done this year just makes it more likely he will end up at Real Madrid.

By Paul Merson / Published 30th December 2017

To beat Alan Shearer’s Premier League record for goals in a calendar year is phenomenal. He’s scored more than Lionel Messi in 2017 and that sums up how good he is.

If Philippe Coutinho is worth £120m, then Kane must be worth at least £150m. The trouble is, Real Madrid will pay it.

They are in a bit of a mess at the moment and if Kane keeps going like this, I don’t see how they won’t come in for him next summer.

He is such a good player – probably the only world-class player in the England team. And he has done it the hard way. He has had to work for everything.

But he has a great attitude, works hard, improves every week and is so humble. You never see him get into trouble. He is the perfect player.

I can’t talk highly enough of him. He never settles for second best and is just getting better and better. Imagine how many goals he might score next year? Phenomenal.

But this is the problem for Tottenham. I don’t believe he’s the type who plays for money, so giving him a new contract won’t make a difference.

He plays because he loves the game and he wants to win things. But can he win them at Tottenham?

Mauricio Pochettino has already thrown away the domestic cups. He says they’re not important.

But Spurs are 21 points behind Manchester City. They are miles away from being title contenders. Over 38 games, how does that squad compete with City?

They have done wonders in the Champions League but at some point they are going to come up against a team who are mustard. Does anyone really think they can win it?

If Real Madrid had wiped the floor with them in the Champions League, then Kane would already be thinking: ‘What am I going to win here?’

Spurs have a new stadium to fund. And they got him for nothing. Are they really going to turn down £150m? Look at all the other players they’ve sold over the years.

Gareth Bale went. Dimitar Berbatov went. Even Kyle Walker went.

At some point, he is going to have a big decision to make. There aren’t many people who don’t want to play for Real Madrid. He would have to be tempted.

It’s a short career and you have to make the most of it.

If he goes there it would be terrible for the Premier League but it would be fantastic for the England team.

He would learn so much and would be playing with some of the best players in the world every week.

What he’s done this year should make him a real threat for England in Russia. But he will probably be shot by the time the World Cup comes around.

That’s why a lighter workload in Spain might actually be good for him and England.

Kane is likely to be a target for the big guns because he guarantees you 25 goals a season and that is priceless in today’s game.

Scarily, he might have scored MORE this year if his manager hadn’t kept taking him off in the last 15 minutes of matches.

If he keeps improving, the sky’s limit. I don’t see a better striker anywhere in the world.

Merson is a twat, but unfortunately other than the stupid paragraph about Poch substituting him I can’t disagree with what he’s saying.

I thought Merson was comic relief ... Really, people can find truth in what he is saying?

Almost New Year, still the same shit.

It's Paul Merson and it's in the Daily Star. What did you expect.

"Gee Paul, this seems badly thought out and deliberately provocative to Spurs fans, i sure hope they don't get annoyed and share it all over the internet to show other people and get them annoyed, that would be awful for our advertising revenue."

Actually i take that back, the conversation above never happened because he no more wrote it than i did (i didn't).

I can’t disagree with what he’s saying.

Oh, I can. Almost every paragraph, after the opening eulogy, is utter nonsense.

Just for example: “Pochettino has thrown away domestic cups...” yeah the ones he’s reached the final and semi final of. He said they are not as important as the title and the champions league.

“Spurs are miles from being title contenders...” So is everyone other than City this season. For the previous two years we have been real title contenders.

I could go on. It’s lazy, cliched, rehashed, ghost-written tabloid fodder which illustrates just how terrified EPL rivals are (most especially Woolwich and ManU) of Kane hanging around while we build around him and a new stadium...

so let me get this straight.......

if he's the type of player interested in money......he leaves, and

if he's the type of player NOT interested in money......he STILL leaves.

cheers Merse.....got it :)

Could that column not be summed up in:

- Kane is one of the worlds best players
- he will likely want to be able to look back on his career having won some trophies
- could that be a problem for Spurs given their resources?
- possibly

How many times does this need to be reiterated? Honestly I can’t believe these people get paid for it.

It's just some twats opinion, the same as mine or yours or some old farts chatting in a pub. Granted in this case its a massive twat.
Just because its printed in a newspaper or spouted on tv doesn't mean it carries any more weight or will have any bearing on what Kane does or doesnt do in the future.
Its not like Kane or his agent are going to read this shit and suddenly think 'Christ he's right. What am I doing?? Fk this I'm off.'

Look at the bright side. At least the hymn these days is "Kane is incredible good, the best of the English, a world star", not "will he do it next year?".
