Exactly - if you spend enough to actually challenge for the title, then the most likely result of failure to win the league is still a CL qualification.
If the target is just to finish 3/4 in the league, then you're battling with 3 or 4 other teams trying to do the same, and the risk of failure is much greater.

That said, I'm sure the transfer budget will still largely be based on sales, which is why Pochettino seems to want clarity on the sales asap, rather than having Levy haggling for the next 3 months. In my opinion we have to get the outgoings done before players go to the World Cup. Sure, we could have a couple that might have "worldie" tournaments, but is it worth the risk of wait and see??
What if there's 3 or 4 other teams spending enough to challenge for the title? What does that guarantee you? There's at least 3 other teams that we can't afford to outspend they can blow us out the water, and therefore that strategy falls to pieces, as unless you keep up with them you're not spending to challenge.

Some positive stuff about us out there today as well-main article is behind The Times paywall but.....

It won't surprise anyone to know that the article Sam Munnery is responding to was obviously written by a Gooner.

Right, something has been bothering me a little bit lately. While Poch has been around for one more season than club why isn't Liverpool under pressure by media to win a trophy to 'prove' there worth. They ain't won anything under him, and have won one league cup in the last ten years, the same as us. Just strikes me as strange..

I think the pundits give us and Poch a lot of extra grief because Poch is so honest about his priorities, and that the FA Cup and League Cup are bottom of the pile. So they sneer at him for being "arrogant" and "not caring about trophies" and use it as a stick to beat him with.

Just watching Pep on Monday night football and to be fair he has been quite complimentary about us. Metioned is a few times saying he knew last season when they came to WHL that they wouldn’t win the league and saying how good we were...

Why don’t we play like that anymore. Where has the high press gone? We never hound teams anymore! I miss it

he is about to play his 3rd final, compared to Poch 1, and it's his 2nd European final 1 in the biggest completion around. yes they might of had a favourable draw to get there, but beating City on route and once in the league has given him some leeway.

we will need to spend to compete next season, but not sure £150 mill will be enough to overturn the 23 pts difference (though no guarantee's City will match this season)

Wembley. Bigger pitch. Press doesn't always work as well.

Part of the challenge is the pace we lost at full back. With walker and rose, opposition full backs stayed a little deeper due to their pace. Now they come higher up so we pressing more players, whereas Trips and Davies sit deeper more. It's why when Aurier plays we attack faster, but with his brain farts we are more likely to do something stupid defensively.

The Mail (not exactly pundits I know) lead today with “Poch demands Spurs double his salary and £100m war chest in pursuit of Zaha, Sess and Martial or he’s off”

Couple of things:

£100m is hardly a “war chest” these days - and would barely be enough to get two of those players.

And where they’ve got the idea he wants his salary doubled from I’ve no idea - seems like something they’ve just plucked out of nowhere.

Never let facts get in the way of a War Chest story!

Poch has been happered by our full backs plain and simple. Kyle Walker was a massive loss for us and a vital gain for Man City. When you sell to your rival in one move City partitioned us.

Surely getting to finals and loosing shows some kind of bottling as well. Also forget what Klopp did before thats irrelevant, doesn't mean anything in regards to Liverpool.

Okay liverpool have reached the Champions League final, but my point wasnt about this season alone, there is just a different understanding of the project. I think the main thing is liverpool is automatically considered a big club by pundits, they don't have to prove anything. Because we are not in that group of teams we are expected to do more to show our quality.

Buying and selling intelligently is more important than blowing a wad of cash around for us to compete. There is plenty of potential within our current players to make them better, though obviously we do need a few quality signings.

I hate them always have, mainly through jealousy as a youngster, and they wear red, and their support

the thing is most of the pundits grew up at a time when Liverpool was the biggest and most successful team in the country, and will always be big in the world of football from their history. Yes we have a history, but we can't touch theirs. Klopp has brought his style of football over, which is entertaining to the neutral and if it wasn't through their defensive incapability's early on they would of most probably finished a clear 2nd.

the pundits pick on us as we are easy meat, realistically punching above our weight doing it the right way, but struggle to reach the final furlong. we have a manager every team would want, we have a fair amount of players others want, but are an easy target because that final furlong, and not paying the players anywhere near what the other 5 pay. football pundits that try to stick the knife in more than anything either played for Liverpool or Arsenal, and a couple now popping up from Chelsea, so they enjoy sticking the knife in, in HOPE they are right as they don't like the fact we have got to where we are, without spending/paying a fortune.

I don't read their crap, and only listen too it for a laugh, as you can hear them criticising through jealousy.

I don't buy the myth that they would of finished second, its just not true. Their form this year has not been all that good. If measuring performance since January they finish 4th, defensive capacity or not they have some kind of fragility to them, there is a reason they tried their absolute best to get knocked out by Roma.

I mean Liverpool could win the PL next season because on their day they are explosive and can be incredible. But so could we. There very little to suggest Liverpool are in a long term better position than we are. Apart from being in a champions league final, though cup competitions have always been poor indicators of long term success.

ts not even about the final furlong as you put it, its just you can recognize the success of a team without winning trophies but we are competitive in every competition we get into. There can only be one winner in these competitions thats just how it is. Its not a failure not to win them.

Walker and Rose... the loss of those two cannot be underestimated, Walker going was huge and Rose has hardly played and when he has just isnt fit

Plus, if Liverpool hadn’t got to the champions league final they wouldn’t have had a great season at all.

4th with a point less than last year, out of the league cup in the 3rd round in September and out of the FA cup in the 4th round in January.

You could indeed say that the early cup exits has helped them in the CL where they have had a favourable draw.
